, probably the differential, which wouldn't throw a check engine light or any other light.

Before we jump to conclusions lets hear what other people have to say.
If it is the diff:
I'd be more concerned with the cost of a new diff. If you guys can get a helms, tools, and are mechanically inclined then you can probably take care of it.

I would call around junk yards to try and find a wreck for the diff. If you can, try to get an 04+ because I hear they are built stronger. If you buy a new one from the dealership you are looking at about 800-1000, for just the part.

I agree - diff.
you can verify this quite easily. brace the front of the car, jack up the rear of the car and put it up on jackstands - good ones. get in the car and engage the clutch and watch the rear end not spin more than those five inches.

mr bagel.....what u mean watch the rear end??? like see if the tires dont spin more that 5inches???? one thing is that u can push the car in neutral??? dont know if that helps at all but idk....im gonna try what u said tommorow
when the car is up in the air, you can do a bit more diagnostics. so, given that it is rear wheel drive, if the rear tires are up in the air, you can test it a bit more, or you can free wheel it and try to move the wheels yourself to see what is binding, or crunching in order to verify that it is a diff - or maybe not.
