Default Oil-usage question

I have an '03 S2000, all stock. Right around 82k miles. For the past little bit I've noticed a 2-4qt oil usage issue between changes. And I am also noticing a small puff of gray/black smoke coming from the tailpipes at high rpm under load. I know of course that they are related, but is it really a big deal? I know my old GS-R would puff a bit at high rpms and I was told it was fairly normal for an older VTEC Honda.

do a compression test, but most VTEC motors use a little oil.... and AP1's are known to eat a little bit of oil, but i don't know about up to 4 quarts

Ok, I'll run a compression test. And I'm probably gonna go ahead and have the valves adjusted too.

Mines boosted and I don't even burn half a quart. Before when I was N/A, I would beat on the car more and I still didn't burn really any. Some thing is wrong

yea i had to put a half a quart in today, but in my defense my oil change is only do in 200 miles and i haven't had to do an oil change since april...ive only put like 2500 miles on it in 7 months lol, so half a quart in 7 months aint bad

I will do a leak down test to see if it's worn out rings if that cheacks out ok that means it's gonna be the valve seals but with that milage and any high reving motor will use at least 1qt in between oil changes.

Would the valve seals be easy enough to have replaced (if needed) when I have the valves adjusted?

Nope it's not something u could do when adjusting the valves , they could be replaced without removing the cylinder head with the proper tools but it's better of to take the heaad off and send it out to a machine shop and get a full valve job replacing the seals as well.

Well that isn't gonna be happening anytime soon (lack of $$$), so I'll just tough it out for now. Have the compression checked and go from there.

How long is your OCI? Up to a quart every 1000 miles is ok. More than that would be cause for concern. Check your oil after every fill up and try not to use to much throttle to see if it stop consumption. Lately with gas so cheap I've been using about 2-3 quarts between oil changes since I've been driving a lot harder. I can use up to 4 or 5 depending on how long I decide to go before I change my oil.

2-4 quarts is a lot of oil. 4 quarts is almost a full oil change.

Just put 4 more quarts in and don't even bother changing your oil!

OCI is 5-6k miles generally. And less throttle? But it's so fun... lol

have it checked out, sounds like you have some blow by at high rev, could be ring, valve or combination of things

compression and leakdown test in order

just get the krank vents

my bone stock 60k mile s2000 use to burn 1 quart every 1,000 miles
after the krank vents installe i burn about 1 quart every 3-4,000 miles
my compression test is perfect even before the krank vent install

my compression is at 240+ across all cylinders and I can burn quite a bit if I'm driving hard. Or if I'm babying the car I might not burn any in one OCI.

mine used to use a little over a quart between oil changes when i used regular mobil 1 full syn, switched to the extended performance (p.s. my S has 120k lol) and it barely uses any oil under the same driving conditions, still get the little black smoke at high RPMS but i have a test pipe and catback. just my .02

keep your rpms below 5k and see if that helps. also, only top off your oil when your at the lower level on the dipstick
