Re: (S@nt0s)
It sounds like alot of people are young and working low-end jobs to make the payments on a depreciating item. I personally couldn't stand working to make just enough for a car payment but hey, everyones got different priorities.

Re: (tommymoose)
So at 40yrs old I still hold the title for the oldest? Com'on there has to be someone older..
I agree with S@nt0s. When I was a teenager I saved most of my money for a nice car. But by the time I was 20, after taking micro & macroeconomics in College, and had become more mature, I realized I needed to invest my $$ instead of blowing it away in a nice car that would lose its value in a few years and worth maybe 1/4 of what I paid. I decided to put it in realestate.
I bought a condo all by myself when I was 20 in '86. I had no credit but the bank took a gamble. My parents didn't have to co-sign either, I think because I put down more than 10% so there was no credit check needed or something like that. The market was booming then. I could have bought a Mustang GT or finance a C4 but chose to buy the condo and rent it out. I never lived in it. I continued living at home and the rent was paying my mortgage.
I am glad now that the insurance for the GT 5.0 back in '86 was $3,200 which was like $10K in today's money.. That's what mainly kept me away from buy sporty/sports cars when I was younger but I knew it was wrong to do it.
I sold the condo a couple of years later and made a $30K profit. That money helped buy a nice house that I still live in today with my family on 3/4 acres. If I sold my house today I 'd make $250-300K. Had I made the decision to take that $15K I had saved up and buy a car, it would have taken me several years more to buy my house, and would have cost me more $$ too. Now how many 20yr olds do you now that say, screw a nice car, I 'm going to buy property, condo, townhouse, etc.?
I was 20 when I became a homeowner, and 25 when I owned my 4bdrm bi-level house on 3/4 acres with double-wide 80ft driveway, big pool, shed, etc.
So that's my advice to you younger people. Invest your $$ while you 're young and it will pay off later and you can buy your sports cars later when you 're still young before you 're 30.
I am paying cash for an '06 S2K (hopefully next week I will own it if the guy gets off his a*s and pays the loan off) and the insurance is only 2 hrs pay for me. I also pay for my wife's CRV EX and own 2 other cars. ie: don't struggle just so you can drive a nice car. Get it when you are more financially stable and have achieved other important things like a home. Owning a home also entitles you to a lot of tax deductions. Save & invest your $$ for your future now, and the cars will come, and everything else.. You probably don't understand me now, but in a few years you 'll say, "you know that 40yr old guy on H-T was right!"
I 'll give you an example. In '97-98 I kept telling my brother to buy a house because they kept going up in price. He decided to spend his savings on a brand new Integra Type-R. He paid cash for it! I was like doh! you did what? With tax it was like $27K because he had to pay sticker plus A/C. So he blew most of his $$ on a car and the rest he lost in the stock market when I was telling him to get it out. Now he and his wife are trying to buy a house and are having a very tough time finding something decent for under $400K in North Jersey. They can't afford an average home in a decent neighborhood. Back in '98 the homes were half price. He missed the boat. Don't make the same mistake.
Sorry for the long note. Didn't mean to preach..

04 Sebring Silver on red, 45k miles
Just out of college, had a 2000 Si that was stolen from in front of my apartment. So, $8k from insurance and I was able to pretty easily buy this car used. I also just purchased an 07 Fit for my comuter. I hate putting the miles on the S2k.

Retired for about 8 years now. Loving every minute of it.
I highly recommend it for those who can do it.
I'll be going to the Wake the Dragon event next week at Deals Gap. There are 193 S owners registered. We will have people coming from as far away as California and Arizona just to drive that 11 mile stretch of Hwy 129. It will truly be a blast.

Re: (b20integrapower)
sure its easy to save up and get a sports car when you're 40.. but as for me, you only live life once.. and i want a sports car and sport bikes now while i'm young

I had a sports car when I was young. I bought a 1957 Triumph TR3 in 1959. I had a great time with that one but I spent as much time under the car as I did driving. it was sweet though.

Re: How old are you? (Rtzx9r)
i don't know how you guys do it. i don't know many adults who can afford an s2000 in my area. i work 50 or 60 hours during summer at 2 jobs and worked during high school and i could barely afford my lude. now that i'm in college, forget it.
and hard to find a nice house for 400,000? u serious? my parents own a decent sized house with 5 acres of land it cost less than 70,000. do all u guys live in manhattan, florida, and cali?
