Default Engine Break in

I am a proud new owner of a 05 s2000, silver with red seats.

How many miles should I take it before I hit VTEC?

I was told, 500, 700 and 2500

Whats the real info?

Mark

Beat the **** out of it right out of the box, just make sure that the engine is warmed up! An easy break in won't mean the engine will last longer or make more power than one that was broken in hard. Will expand if needed....

The owner manual states to stay under 5500rpm for the first 600 miles.

This is the routine I followed way back when:

No VTEC until 500 miles while varying engine speeds below the VTEC engagement point.

No redline until after 1K miles while varying engine speed below the redline.

I have had little or no oil burning issues after the normal break-in procedure and my S2K is religiously tracked.

woosey break in

i do agree on the varying engine speeds below vtec for first 600 miles. i also think that after 500 miles you should redline the car but not all the time. just go through 1,2,3 every 50-60 miles. for some reason, my car used to have burning issues once switching to synthetic and now it doesn't. i have no idea. could be due to the full tune up i did but who knows

maybe the pdi inspector of MY (as in not yours) ride took his job seriously and didnt get a chuckle out of ******* up other peoples cars.

hey, maybe you can get one of the porters from your dealership to come on here and tell us how he ran over a curb in a car he couldnt afford.

I heard you gotta drive hard so your car will get more power later on..... I did that on couple of my new cars and surely on the Quarter Miles sure it faster then the rest! My .02

You are not gonna keep the car forever! Might as well have fun!

Thank you! Don't follow what the manual says about 500 miles before vtec or anything of that nature. In order for the rings to seat properly high combustion chamber pressures are needed and can only be attained from loading the engine, read giving that biatch some gas! The higher pressures from loading the engine flattens the rings evenly against the cylinder walls and lets them seat properly. The better the rings seat the more power the engine will make. But this is something that can only be done when the engine is brand new (under 50 miles or so) or back from a rebuild.

Mark, you'll hear many, many different opinions on how to properly break-in the engine. Before you push it too hard, make sure the engine is up to temp otherwise you can do some damage.

What I did for my race engine is get it up to reg. running temp, then take it out on the street. Do a ~ 2 runs in first (bring it to ~ 7K) then decel - let the engine do the braking. Then do the same thing in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears. After that take it out on the highway or other open road (don't completely beat on it but push it a little). Go home and change the oil!!! Don't use synthetic quite yet. Now you can go out and have some fun with the car and push it pretty hard. It really isn't necessary but I would change the oil again after ~ 500 miles.

(There are some interesting discussions on engine break-in in the H-T engine section.)

Have fun!!

Ring seating isnt exactly like a motorcycle...most bikes are required to run up to higher rpm's to properly seat rings, but you're not reving that high, and honestly, i'd just follow what the manual says and keep it under VTEC for 600miles...it doesnt take that long, we hit 600miles in the first weekend we had it, and after that, all was well...atleast in this case, if you do this, if something DOES happen, you'll have no doubt that it was an engine problem, and not something you did by not properly breaking in the engine like the manufacturer says.

And this...

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">LOL, when I do pdi's here at work(when its slow) we do s2000's you should see how hard we drive them, brand spankin new with 2miles on them....redline everytime...the only down fall to this is we get that new burning smell coming from everywhere i dont doubt the PDI inspector of your ride didnt do the same</TD></TR></TABLE>

...this is exactly why when we bought ours, i requested it have ZERO miles on it...and when we got there, it did, they had cranked it, driven the car from where the truck dropped it off in the rear gated area and put it next to the doors...zero miles...no offense, but these are cars people are paying good money for, not little toys or something, and when you take these people's cars out that they want to break in, be the first to do various things to it, you kinda ruin that when you decided you want to be cool and stuff and run them up like that...in the future if i get a new car i will never buy anything with more than ZERO miles on the odometer, just a personal preference so i know some guy didnt run my car up like your explaining above...they told us at first that they had to have them inspected off the truck, but if you request it, they will NOT drive your new car, as they didnt with ours.
