I don't own an S2k myself.. but posting for a friend...


the problem started as a kinda wirring noise in the diff

well the other day while cruising about 60-65 mph..

Blam.. pulls over.. all the diff fluid on the ground, car wont move..

ring and pinion is my guess..

anyways.. towed it to Honda...

they say they have to change the entire unit as a whole.. and are quoting 3,300 bux for the diff alone.. that's before labor oils etc..


the car is no longer under warranty and will have to come out of his own pocket...

so I'm here lookin for alternatives.. buying a used OEM diff, aftermarket diff, swap another diff from a diff car.. etc etc..

i'm tech savy and do my own wrench work.. i'm just wondering.. is it possible to change the ring and pinion, fix the pumpkin etc.. or is it chewed up and a gonner now?

the car is still at the dealer and i haven't had a chance to see it myself.. but i'm trying to do some home work on the subject..

People sell pumpkins as a whole for around $1000. Check S2ki also.

BTW be careful who you buy one from. I got mines from an s2KI mod. Before that though I was scammed and sold a bad diff. Alot of bad s2k diffs out there that people lie about being in good shape.

I lost 500 for the diff and 500 for the labor on my last one..

the new one i picked up for 500 and 500 install

so I lost 1k because of some scammmer</TD></TR></TABLE>

You found some VERY cheap diff. Most go for 1200-1400 USED from a junk yard

most likely... typically when gears come part in a small housing at 60-65 mph.. the odds are likely that inside of the housing (pumpkin) is all sorts of fracked up....

take it apart and see, plus there is going to be metal chunks everywhere!!

all depends on what aspect of the diff went BOOM...

best bet and easiest thing to do is get a new one.

honda replaced mine after the warranty expired. i'd keep working on them
i got a brand new unit and paid 280 labor for the install.

no way id let them charge me $3k. Id use used parts and rebuild it myself

most of the failures are due to abuse...alot of people launch the s2000 and the diff goes boom although sometimes they just fail...

that's exactly how this one went as well...


was yours irreperably damaged? or u just didn't bother?

i'm collecting the car from the dealer today on a flat bed takin it home

i'll try to drop the Pumpkin and crack it open...

see how bad it is on the inside... and if there's any hope for it...

comptech is not better than an OEM ap2 diff core...

Maybe it isn't as good as an ap2 diff but i'm sure it wont break as easy as an ap1 diff and 769 dollars for a new diff is alot better than 3k for an oem diff..

3k for OEM is stupid when you can ebay an OEM diff for around 800$ or buy a spare from an s2k member on the site.

I had the exact problem with mine. I had a whinning noise for a while and then I was on the interstate, downshifted to make lane change and exit, and BOOM, diff housing blew all to hell after a gear broke. I found one in a junk yard from a 2004 with around 5k miles for 500 bux. Been going great now for about 15k miles.

my brother was lucky that he did not have to replace anything but the gears. you can pick the gears up for cheap from kia for around 150 or less. also getting them cryotreated would make them stronger. honda was wanting around 1500 but we took the car to the local v8 dude and he charged 250 labor and did a good job even though he never worked on a honda rear

someone told me that a Nissan Rear end could be retrofitted onto the S2k with some minor mods..

does anyone know if there's any truth to that? or is it just someone talking outta their ***?

the silvia rear end can be fitted in the s2k but is it worth the time and money, no. only one person has done it. he was planning on selling a kit to make it all work but he has yet to get it to work perfectly

If you consider a whole new diff mounts and a custom driveshalft "minor mods", then yes.
