Default Is 81,000 miles on a 2001 AP1 considered high?

I am new and in the market to purchase an s2k. I come fresh off of reading rx7 forums, therefore 80k miles scares me. Are there any known problems that occur in 2001 models and if the car is taking care of during driving, is there anything in 81,000 miles that I should be afraid of.

Can I get an estimate of the remaining engine life or where such a car would stand in terms of longevity (with normal driving of course). Sorry for the abstract question but if you were looking for a used s2k tell me your thoughts on a 2001 81k miles with a flawless body and no known motor problems (leaks, grinds, etc). Are chances for such things coming up soon?

80K isnt relly that much on a S2000, ive seen a few with over 120K... i cant say how long an S2K will last because they still are fairly new but I would imagine atleast until 160-200... after all it is a honda... things that you will have to do soon is timing belt/water pump and all other belts, clutch, most likely tires, possibly soft top, and bulbs are just a few things that are expensive that come to mind. Im not saying that all of those things would need replacing just things to watch out for. How much is it going for?

Thanks for the quick reply, that is the kind of information I was looking for!!

It is going 13,500, clear title, stock everything, replaced soft top, original body work, smooth tranny.

More input welcome

EDIT: Also, are there any deal breaking differences between the 00' 01' and 02' models, such as known weaknesses and such? 2000 being the first model they rolled out.

If you really think about it.. The mileage is actually less than average.

Yeah yeah.. it may have 80k miles, but expand that into 6 years. It is said that 20k miles a year is average for a car, yet this car averages out to less than 13,400 miles a year. Not bad if you ask me!

Like it's been said above.. A general mechanic tune-up will probably have to be done. I would also think that the bulbs on the HID's have shifted their colors and would need a new bulb as well - You can find those on Ebay for not that much as well.

I agree, and 80k is nothing to me, but since I have just began to do my research on s2k's I would like to compile as much information as I can.

Thanks again.

Can anyone comment on the model differences?

lol...well S2000s dont have timing belts. Timing chains FTW. You probably dont have to replace them ever. Although i think the interval may be like 150k or something.

Dont worry about the soft top. It's only 6 years old. I havent heard of any 01 cars having to replace the top. Miles dont really affect the soft top. lol if you bought a used one, "SOFT TOP...ONLY 80K ON IT" wouldnt come up. The soft top is fine unless you see wear on it.

Welcome to Honda quality man. It's nothing like the RX-7's break down daily mantra. It's just a 4 cylinder piston motor...so 80k is like putting 80k on any other N/A piston motor. Although, make sure it hasnt been beat on for all of those 80k miles. It does rev to 9000rpm after all. You dont want a performance motor with worn parts sapping power.

I wouldnt buy one with 80k....but thats just my preference. I'd rather have a fresh motor and fresh suspension parts. So do you dont have that over-time slop that always builds up.

you know what I meant my timing belt... ***

and since you havent heard of anyone replacing the top at 6 years, talk to a few guys on s2ki... they get tears and rips in them all the time, and i know it doesnt have to do with mileage smart ***, it has to do with age and where the vehicle was kept, ie: garage or outside.

ohh and you aint gettting a fresh motor and fresh suspension parts without paying almost double that price. If you want a car with 20K on it or less there usually in the 05+ range, so good luck finding one in one piece for 13.5K

as to the OP, 13,500 is a steal man... I did a quick search on cars.com and that was the cheapest 2001 in the country with those miles on it. see what you can get him down, get it for maybe 13 flat and drive away a happy customer. Any warranty implied? Also, the value of that car wont go down significantly so in a year or so you wanted a newer model, you could basically sell it for what you got it for, maybe even more... Look at how the NSX's are keeping there value...

Oh yea, that car turns out to be a year 2000 model with 81k on it. The miles don't bother me that much. I also found a 2004 with 80k miles for $18k. Besides being newer, does the 04 model have a huge advantage in terms of specs and improved engineering (over the first model) over the 00' model. Thanks for the input guys.

i say get it 81k isnt that bad plus it had to have gone through the 67k tune up. From what i have been hearing the motors keep running strong as the miles add up. I have a 2000 s2k and its got 69k on it and the only thing thats starting to wear is the soft top its got two tiny cracks but im planning to replace it with the 03 top that has the glass window. Anyways get the car 81k is nothing and the price is ok your gona love it.

it's the worst time of the year to get a drop top, get it at winter esp. for those with snowy, rainy climate, it's gonna be cheaper.

there's people with 200k in s2ki.com, nothing special.

someone supercharged for 100k with 150k on the odo or something, go hit up the FI forum in s2ki.com

mine has 103000 today, just did a smog check and it passed with flying colour, the compression checked at 100k was well within spec

If your worried about the motor, you could take it to a honda dealer and get it certified for another 20k, for $1500. if it breaks your out cheap.

driven is one thing... but also how it has been maintained. the previous owner did an OK job... i've had to fix up a few things here and there. but nothing major. it also helps that this car as far as i know it... has been stock all it's life.
