This is probably a dumb question but I'm trying to figure out why my ruckus won't start and have come to the LED drive unit part.... What does this part do? and could I use an aftermarket part in place of it?

Just a quick run down on what's going on with my ruckus. It is a ground up build so all parts are from different years except for the engine and harness. I've spent months tracking down why it won't start and have gotten nowhere with it. I have no power to the headlights, front/rear blinkers, brake light, ignition, or indicator lights. I do get power to the fuel pump and speedo gauge. I have LED lighting for all lights front and rear.

My ECU does work. I tested it on another scooter. My start button will click when I take out one of the main relays and it even sounded like it wanted to crank three times the other day but no luck. when both main relays are plugged in I get no click from the starter.

Can anybody shine some light on this? Thank you.

The black LED drive unit part is only used to make make your fuel light flash.
Headlights only work when the bike is running. Check the fuses on the positive side of the battery terminal.
Make sure you connect the brake light switch, it is needed to start the bike.

I didn't think about the brake switch, I'll definitely need to check that and see if a new one does the trick. Should I be looking to replace the right side or the left side?

It doesn't matter which side you use to start the bike. As long as the brake light works when you pull the lever it should be ok.
They're pretty cheap so you might as well replace both if they look worn out.

I bought a newer wire harness, two new brake switches, and a new spark plug.

I am currently getting power to the speedo, rear lights, brake light, turn signals, fuel pump.... I am not getting power to the indicator lights (gas/brights/turn) spark plug so I bought a new ignition coil that will be coming in two days.

If I replace this ignition coil and am still not getting power to the plug, what else can I diagnose to get this thing started?! I feel like I'm sooooo close!

The gas light will only work if your tank is empty. Also double check that this resistor is plugged in.(Located below the ecu.)


Make sure the indicator lights are plugged in to the black LED unit, the resistor also plugs in to that unit.
It's possible the indicator bulbs may be blown.
Check your main ground wire, it's a thick green wire located on the engine near the coil area. Make sure it has a good connection on both ends.
Might need to get new relays, main and starter.
Make sure the kill switch is working.

When I push the ignition start button, the motor will turn a little each time I push the button for about 3-4 button pushes, then it will stop. It seems there is a spot in the engine cycle where it doesn't have enough push to get past. I can manually crank the motor to get past that part of the cycle and then the ignition button will move the motor a little for another 3-4 button clicks.

At this point I have replaced everything with the ignition system except for the thermostat and bystarter. Would either of these parts be keeping me from getting current to the spark plug? I know the thermostat is on the same sub-harness as the ignition coil.

I'm pulling my hair out with this issue, so any help is greatly appreciated!

The best thing I could say is if you hear the LED Drive Unit clicking it should mean that parts bad or a connection problem most likely bad
