wierd electrical issue
Has anyone else ever had their temp gauge rise when the drive with the headlights on but go right back down when you turn the lights off? I know the car can not be overheating and cooling as fast as the gauge goes up and down. It is really wierd....also the battery light flashes on and off but the battery and alt. both tested 100% fine. The alt. was puttin out like 14.5 volts so I cant think of what or where the problem is. Also how hard is it to change the ABS relay or the component? My abs light is stuck on now and before it got stuck on it it made a sound like a motor was whirring then the light would come on, now it just stays on all the time and there is no noise.....i hate my car.....i think its time to rip out the pos h23 and swap a H22.....any input or ideas?
It sounds like you have an abbrasion ware through several wires and thus certain ciruits are compleating other circuits (that would only otherwise be compleated to; set an error light, or effect the reading resistance based gauge). Often this is caused by a missing or not attached wiring clip.
All the wires in the car are routed and grouped into bundels and taped together and cliped along the way to keep them in place. If one of these bundels get moved out of place and starts rubbing against anything that might ware through the wire insulation, eventually you're going to get electrical signals arcing across wires that otherwise would never.
This phenominon (phemoninam...phimoninun. minu minum.. whatever) along with a few other general sceanarios result in problems not unlike the one you describe which are all basically grouped under the catigory of electrical 'mystery' problems. Bascially no one is easly going to be able to take your simptoms and say 'ah, you have to do this and all will be well'.
Unfortunatly the only way to fix this is with a very detailed wiring diagram in one hand and a test light in the other and about 5 hours at least of sitting upside down in a yogic possition with your head cramed under the dash and you trying to focus your eyes on somthing that is about 3 inches from your face.
If you have any experiance with using a multimeter this might be somthing you can fix - its not that complicated but it is tedious. Otherwise this may qualify as one of thoes rare times when you want to bring your car right to a shop without touching a thing and have somone with years of experiance finding mystry electrical problems toil away at it.
Before anything though you might want to poke your head under the dash with a bright light and follow a few wires around and see if there are any obvious abrasion sites. If what i suspect is true wires will have to be cut out and replaced with a few new lengths of wire - make sure whoever does it splices the wire in the right way, soders it and shrink wraps it - and not just some quickie-crimp connectors. good luck
PS, does anything else dim or change when you put the head lights on?

With the ABS, sounds like what mine did when one of the wheel speed connection harness was not pluged back in. It was making some crazy motorized sounds from both corners. Note, with this case the ABS light didnt come on until the abs tried to kick in and would be reset each time the car was started.
I suggest having the abs code scanned (or jump the connector youself). this might give you a better idea of whats causing the problem.

let me help you with this problem i had it and posted about a million posts and finally found the problem after i changed almost everything like the radiator the hose thermostat etc... haha
BUT ALL IT WAS ,was the ground wire from the valve cover to the chassy. its probably corroded change it and ill garantee itll fix your problem.
itll cost you about 6 -8 dollars

can someone post a picture of this mysterious wire? I dont seem to have one anywhere.....maybe i am just overlooking it? If I could get a picture hosted i can take one of mine and show you what i mean
and no nothing dims or anything the temp gauge just goes up and down.....its stupid

If your looking at the engine from the front of the car... it is the wire on the front, right of the valve cover. It connects to the frame. Replace that.

I would seriously get another and just replace it. When I replaced mine it looked fine, but was causing my temp gauge to appear as if it were over-heating. For the short while that I have been on HT I have seen many with the same situation and most have cured the problem by replacing this wire. Just do it.

yep excatly..
check that thick wire and the especially the thing black one in the second photo...
it might look good but try touching it and c if it peels off.
if it does or doesnt just change it its only about 6 bucks.
