Default vtec problems.... help!

I have an h22 and I finally got my car on the road after having to redo the head

I had the head milled .0012, installed high comp valves intakes are .5mm over sized, and installed dual valve springs, and I'm using a .0014 head gasket

So there is a .0026 distance removed from the head and block. I also removed the balance shaft belt

I advanced the intake and exhaust cams 3*

I'm still using a untuned p13 ecu with an unknown chip (no speed governor that's how I know)

The first test drive I let the car warm up for about 10 mins and took it for a spin and everything was perfect until vtec was suposed to kick in and it sounded like it kicked in but it was sputtering had no power until about 6500 rpm then it kinda had power but nothing real special

Does it need tuned that bad like maybe not. Enough fuel or do you think it could be something else?

Help please

Seems like that unknown chip inside the ECU is messing up your powerband. Make sure you have the correct oil level, good oil pressure, motor is at normal operating temp, and no dents on the oil pan. VTEC should be working properly with those mentioned.

I have never heard of a P13 chipped ECU besides P72 and P28 ECU for VTEC motors. I suggest you run either a P72 or a P28 ECU for your setup. I bet its that unknown chip.

It ran perfect before I re did the head all of the oil levels are fine no dents in the oil pan and I'm 100% sure its a p13 I don't understand it

It runs perfect before vtec

make sure ur ignition timing is set properly u can do this by gettin a timing light and shining it through the flywheel hole right by the starter

Oh I also figured out that if I'm in a higher gear and down shift and get on it runs what seems to be perfect

I would get a wideband on there and see whats going on. If its not a fuel issue, maybe try zeroing out the cam gears.

If I set the cans at zero the cam timing would be retarded..... I got a vafc2 for next to nothing today, hooked it up and added fuel from vtec 4600 rpm to redline with the biggest increase from 4600 to 6500 and its still doing it but running better after about 5800

I was thinking maybe I was detonating so i tried octane booster (always run 93) it runs a little better than it did but it still falls on its face from 4600 to 5800

If I retard ignition timing it runs worse

I tried retarding exhaust cam 1* so it was set advanced 2* and intake still advanced 3* it ran worse

I cant figure it out its making me crazy.

cam gear timing is way tricky, I'd try running at !* on intake and exhaust to see if that makes any difference. just a hair too much or too little adjustment can kill your powerband. run an indicator light bulb to your spool valve(vtec solenoid, one wire to the spool valve wire and one to a ground.. see if your ecu is even engaging vtec. IDK from there. if everything seems to be fine snag up a p28 and plug that in.. see if it runs better

I'll try the indicator light but I'm pretty sure its engaging ... as for the p28... a virgin p28 wouldn't give my motor enough fuel and wouldn't control the secondaries in the intake manifold and it would run a bell of a lot worse

What is the exhaust setup? Did you use the same cams as you used before the build? Do you have a wideband?

Modified dc header with 2.75" collector welded to a 2.75" 28" glasspack with about 2ft of 2.75" after that... no cat exhaust ends right before the the first bend would start

Same cams jdm h22

No wideband

I used the vafc and moved vtec to 5000 instead of 4600 it runs a lot better but not perfect when vtec first engages

Care to elaborate why you think that removing the balance shaft belt is making it run like this?

I doubt it has anything to do with your balance belt. I had a friend that popped his off and it ran virtually the same. a little faster through his top end,and a little more vibration on the freeway.. thats it. and as for your ecu, I meant a chipped p28. I personally live by them for obd-1 vtec setups. I'll be more specific next time lol..It definately sounds like your having fuel/ignition tuning issues. get it tuned..?

Yeah I'm realliy thinking its tuning also lastnight it was a little colder and it ran horrible... boggging and cutting out in low rpm driving, low idle...

I think im going to try to get a p72 that way I still have iab's and get it tuned on crome
