Default vtec?

I have h23a1 engine I was wondering If I could take a the head off of a h23 vtec accord or somthing and get all the necessary ecu and stuff but would that work out? I want the h23 rather than h22 just because of more torque and such so thats y im not just buying a new engine. thanks for your help.

I personally don't see where it would be a problem, since the VTEC head will bolt right on the H23A block. There are of course those who will urge you consider the reliability in this swap, as the cranks of the VTEC/Non-VTEC blocks were manufactured differently, leaving you with cast internals instead of forged. Otherwise it would be a simple head and ecu swap.

I've done this swap one time, and 10,000 miles later, there still hasn't been any isues with the crank or internals otherwise giving any signs of early demise(sp?). That's just MY experience though.

I'm not really sure what the differences in the heads would be other than maybe more or less agressive cams between the H22 and H23 VTEC... *shrug* Maybe someone else can chime in on that one.

However you go, good luck, and sorry I couldn't offer more help!

Dan

The h23 cranks are forged just like the h22 cranks. The reliability issue comes from the very low rod to stroke ratio(1.49 versus 1.58 of the h22).The h23 block also doesnt have the oil squiters the h22a has for cooling the pistons.

Yes, OIL SQUIRTERS! Thanks aeolus, I knew I was forgetting SOMEthing! But, I was under the impression (from several forums, and my local machine shop and honda techs, that the 23 crank is definately CAST, whereas teh 22 is FORGED.

Of couse, there's a lot of debate on this issue all around the performance groups as the the construction of both cranks. Either way, I'd still recommend the H22 block, or at least the internals of one.

That's just MY .02$ HTH

the rod ratios is what kills you, youll spin bearings all day with that bottom end, just cant handle the higher revs...also you want to keep your motor cuz of tourqe? the h22 has more anyways...your much better off selling your motor and just buying an h22, seriously wayyy less headaches and money...but, everyone has thier desires i guess..later
