Default VSS Removal/Installation problems

I just finally received my new VSS (with the gearing mechanism) and I remove the old one quite easily just twisted and pulled. Now installing the new one it fits in half way and won't go anywhere. I tried putting a little force to it and now I can't even get it out. The car was in 1st gear while I was trying this, I called it a day and just bolted my shift linkages back so I will have transporation because it ended up getting scorching hot. Should the car be in neutral for a new VSS to be installed? Any tips of pulling the stuck one out?

Being in neutral shouldn't matter, BUT, it does help to lubricate it with some oil before you try to slip it in. Especially on the o-ring. You don't wanna install a dry o-ring. It could cut it and then it will leak.

I never had an issue. If you try to install it and the teeth of the gears are misaligned then I can see it causing trouble.

I am having this same problem installing my vss too. I was able to get the gear portion in the whole all the way to the first round section with the pin in it but not all the wat to where the rubber 0-ring is. I am scare to try to force it down in there because of having the same problem the OP is having (getting it stuck). Any threads anyone can direct us to cuz this is the last thing I need to do to get this damn car running :D

I had no prob when i put in my new VSS. The Honda manual says intall is just the reverse of removal. All i can think of is did the small toothed gear come out with your original VSS, if not it would make it not possible to put in the new one. Other than that all i think you can do is lubricate the new one and gently try to get it to fit, i wouldnt be too aggressive with it or you may damage it. Goodluck with it.

I have a JDM y21 tranny and supposedly from what I understand some usdm vss's won't fit for some reason. When I look at the bottom of the vss it looks flat. When I look into the hole down at the bottom where the shaft is suppose to make contact w/ the floor it looks like there is a notch where it's suppose to mate instead of being flat like the vss. I am really confused. I have tried twisting the vss into place but that doesn't help. I understand it's suppose to have a tight fit but this thing just feels like it's too big to go in.

Your best bet would be to call your local honda parts store and check if this is the case or not. Also check the VSS you have is the right part too.
