Default Torqueless Motor

I have been driving my 92 Si 4WS with an H23 for sometime now. Couple of days ago was the first time I drove a Prelude with an H22. After driving my car, it just felt like the H22 has no troque at all. There is no pull comparted to the H23 before VTEC hits. I think the H22 would be a great motor for a track/autoX car, but for daily driving the H23 pulls without having to rev nearly as much. After driving both motors, i think H23 VTEC is on my project list. Props to all the guys who have boosted their H23s and defied the temptation of getting an H22.

Just a question: How much torque does your h23 have? How much torque does an H22 have?

they have very close torque numbers, the reason your h23 may have slightly more torque is obviously because of more displacement and greater volumetric efficiency because of the very short rods it uses, however this significantly reduces reliability, high-end power, and wear and tear

the first vtec car i rode in was a 99 prelude SH and it hauled ***. since then ive always wanted to swap a h22a and replace my h23 and havnt gotten around to it since. Ive read a lot about the h23vtec and read as soon as you start you dont know what ur getting into.

well duh, that's the way the motors are designed.

The H23 makes torque earlier in the powerband. THe H22a makes more but at a higher rpm.

It's a trade-off.

Thats because lots of people like to go the cheapest possible route in terms of money...in which case they don't get all the parts needed or they simply do it wrong and they blow their motor. But there are others out there that successfully pulled it off and they couldn't be happier.

It all depends if you are willing to spend the time and money.

You can read more about it here (H23 VTEC)
