timing question
when setting tdc will the tdc mark on the flywheel be in between the 2 prongs and the cam gears line up and tdc if the cams a a tooth off? basically im asking if the fly wheel will display tdc and the cams as well if the cams a a tooth off?
you should always use the tdc mark on the flywheel first, make sure your using the tdc mark and not the 15* mark +/- that is the one with the 3 marks the one by it self is the tdc
when the crank is at tdc the cams should have all the marks line up parellel to the surface of the head where the valve cover bolts on
the cams and flywheel will only agree when the timing belt is set correctly, if you set TDC by the flywheel and your a tooth or more off on either cam of the cam gear you will notice. helps if you use a small ruller as a strait edge for the marks on the cams.

so i just look down in to the tranny and line those marks first then correct the cams cause everything looked like it was alighned but the flywheel can be on tdc depending where you stand you know so ill try to reset that and then the cams cause right now it starts but its idle is high and the 15 degree mark is way above the pointer when i use the gun on it and i tried to retard it but the distributer maxes out so i think it may be the tdc thats off what do you think?
when you look thru the window there is a pointer and a smal like pitch fork looking thing, you want to line the mark up at the pointer while looking thru the pitch fork type thing. you are right aobut it being at tdc depending on where you stand but there is a "sight" for you to look thru, take a closer look with a flash light.
ya thats what i meant if you stand directly over it the timing mark is between the forks but if i look at it from the front of the car its not but i just looked at where the number 1 piston was at for a reference point. but theres another ? theres 3 marks correct the first line you see while rotating the engine counter clockwise is just a line then i see the 15 mark and then another line the last line is tdc correct .... just making sure

it depends on if you have an timing light that has a **** for timing advancement.
for one that has the ****: turn the **** to 15 and use the WHITE mark.
if you have one without the ****, you have to go by the RED 15 mark.
