Default how to check for tdc

i have my h22 set at tdc but i seem to still have timing issues so i was wondering if anyone has some helpful hints on how to make sure the #1 cylinder is at tdc and the cams as well... now i know about the marks on the flywheel and the lines on the cam but the way you have to look at the notches on the flywheel can leave you with a tooth or 2 off on the cams you know. will some one anyone help me?

put a long, clean socket extension in the #1 cylinder spark plug hole. turn the motor by hand and watch until the extension peaks, and starts to come back down. there aren't any marks to look for, but its a good way to guestimate. or you could look at your crank gear. the marks on that are much easier to identify and line up.
