Temp. Gauge Problems?
I was driving on the high way and it turns out I sprung a pretty sizeable coolant leak in my radiator. I started to see some steam comming out of my hood so I put the heat on and got home quick. I had little to no coolant and my temp gauge never moved.
I was wondering if anyone has ever seen their temp gauge ever go over half way? Is it possible that my coolant temp sensor has gone bad? I replaced it about 35k ago...
Any ideas? TIA guys...
any way I can check to see if I did any damage(besides checking my oil)? (i'm thinking head gasket stuff)

I had exactly the same problem a year ago. Car was over heat but gauge didn't move a bit. The result are, water/coolant were leaking into the engine and I had to replace the head gasket twice and the problem still exist. Later it leads to the blown motor.
Not a good sign man, try not to drive long distance until you figure out the real problem. I am guessing it could be 1. you need a new radiator. 2. You need to replace your head gasket (that's where coolant goes inside the engine)
Gauge is smaller problem for you right now....I talked to several luder owners and it seems to me it's pretty common among us all.. ..change the sensor, Replace the ground wire.. will help

Maybe someone can back me up on this theory...
Since the water temp sensor sits at a high point in the cooling system, would it make sense that if there were no coolant or low coolant ... that the gauge would not read correctly? Whaddya think?
And oh yea, I've seen mine above half way, but it wasn't actually over heating. It was a faulty ground-wire. Go figure.

it wouldnt actually give a incorrect reading.. the reason the sensor is placed on top, is so that trapped air will create a hotter temperature to let you know that you need bleed the system of any air
that is why i kind of see a problem with our temp rating..the bars are sooo huge that it is not accurate. next time your engine smokes up like that, pull over! you dont want to kill your engine driving your engine that hot..fix the hose...check and see if your thermostat is still working..put in that 50/50 water coolant mix in your radiator...bleed it till you see the coolant inside your radiator is moving..then put the radiator cap back on and you should be fine.

How can I check to see if the thermostat is working or not? TIA

With the car cold, pull off your radiator cap. Start the car and let her warm up. (normally 2 fan cycles) Now watch the coolant in your radiator.... when the thermostat opens, you will see the coolant begin to flow.
If this is happening, then your thermostat is working.
BTW/Disclaimer: At least... as far as I know.

my 4th gen bars move, but the car never overheats. it seems like the stop temp guage will move when my car gets up about 200 degrees. i have an after market temp guage from auto meter now to solve this problem.
norm operating temps for me are between about 190 and 210. do these numbers sound about right? ever since my swap from a single cam non vtec to an h22 was done the stock gauge has gone haywire.

It is most likely a bad ground wire. Read all of this and save yourself some money and a headache.
