Default Technical Question... Auto vs Manual?? SH or Base??

Ok,

For all you techies out there, I've got a question. I used to have a 4th gen (1996) lude a few years back, and now I'm about to sell my S2000 to get a 5th gen Lude and I'm wondering, what are the advantages/disadvantages of an automatic vs 5sp tranny on the prelude?? Other than the obvious better gas mileage, quicker shifting, etc.. What are the dependability issues with the two? Are there any major mechanical issues with either? From a technical standpoint, which would be a better buying decision if about 2-3 hrs/day monday through friday were spent in stop and go traffic?? I love my 6sp in the S2k but I guess my laziness is taking over and the thought of not having to shift in traffic is very tempting. I wouldn't be doing any performance mod's so speed isn't really an issue. Any help/advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Michael

*****EDIT*******

One more question... SH or no?? Again speed/racing is not my priority this time around, so it will not be drivin hard nor will the weight make a difference. So...Yes or no? Is it worth it? Or is it just another part to possible go wrong and cause hassle??

Here is a link to some pics of my current baby, when she's gone I'm really gonna miss her....

ya the prelude SS trannies are terrible...have a VERY high failure rate. Mine died at 53k miles and i had to have it rebuilt. If your gonna get a lude, get a manual

Get the manual, stay away from the SS trannies if you plan on racing your lude. If not then the SS tranny would probably last quite a long time.

I love my S2k, but I bough it about 2 years ago with a lot more money on hand and a lot less major bills coming in every month. Before I refinanced I was looking at a $600/mo car note every month, PLUS insurance which was killer for an 18-20 yr old, now its just over $400/mo. If I get a 'lude I'd only be lookin at about $200/mo tops with a significant drop in insurance rates as well.

The money just isn't flying around like it was before, and I want to concentrate more on school now so less bills means less time needed to work. Education comes first and I hope all of you agree with that. Get an education now and a well paying job means I'll have plenty of money and time to play with toys when I get older!! But for now I need something just a little bigger and more practical for a 25 mi commute each way in rush hour traffic to my new job.

I'm gonna get another S later on, hopefully in a few more years, because I love the car and it is perfect. I just dont want it as my only car (not the best choice for driving in the rain) and can't really afford 3 cars right now...

But... One more question... SH or no?? Again speed/racing is not my priority this time around, so it will not be drivin hard nor will the weight make a difference. So...Yes or no? Is it worth it? Or is it just another part to possible go wrong and cause hassle??

Thanks
Michael

Sounds practical. I just finished school, and that's why my lude is basically stock. Once I pay off my loans, I'll have a little to play with.

If you want something with a little more room and good for commuting, I'd got for an Accord. That's what I had before it was stolen, and you can't beat it for what you want.

I'm at 9,XXX miles, and I haven't had any problems with my SS tranny, nore have any of the four or five people I know with SS Preludes. My only issue is that it's probably robbing a lot of power, but if you don't plan on doing any racing or anything like that, then I don't think that'd be an issue for you.

If you're going to be stuck in that much traffic, then I think you should get an automatic. I don't think you're going to blow it up just commuting normally.

even during conservative use there has been enough SS tranny failures to make you not want to ever get one.

the SH is nice, but may not be worth the extra money you may have to pay for ATTS. At the same time, if you're keeping the lude close to stock and want a fun practical car that's mostly headache free, the sh is a good choice.

i dfon tknow.. form what i hear.. the sh atts is a pain in the ***.. like if it breaks down.. or something like that..

but if you really want a car that will just get you from point a to point b.. cheaply.. get a civic..

but im assuming you want something kinda nice.. and sporty.. so you're going with the prelude... anyhow..

auto preludes.. - you wanan stay away 100%.. it'll probably cost you about 50-75% of the value of the car just for replacing trannies.. seriously.. those things break down so much its crazy...

manual - good gas milage.. 5th gear all the way baby.. haha.. and lots of pros.. if you want to modd it.. you can.. if you dont.. they look nice stock.. just make sure you get a good alarm.. and nobody jacks your car.. but 5th gens come with an immoblizer.. so im pretty sur eyou dont have to worry..

ok im ranting.. but maybe cuz im alittle faded...

haha.. good luck on your next car.. and that s2k is a beaut

get the base 5spd. wait, i have a 2000 base 5spd....wanna trade?

no seriously, get the 5spd - even if you have to commute - you'll be better off in the long run and will have to worry less about the tranny failing.

Haha, I know you're joking, but on a serious level trades are welcomed!! If any of you 5th gen owners would like to trade up to the best premium sports car on the market for under 50g's, drop me a line. It will save me the trouble of selling my car, finding a prelude, talkin to bank for financing....blah blah blah... Preferably in the DFW, Texas area.....

If you ever plan on supercharging or going turbo on the prelude get a base model prelude. Also without a choice get a manual. Automatic transmissions are known to fail pretty fast, and aren't exactly fast. Reason why not to get a SH if you go boost is since you will have to disable ATTS and take out the fuse. It will just leave extra 50 pounds? lying around in the car. If you just want to go stock or N/A then just get a Type SH so you will have something similar to LSD, but not as great.

Yeah, I would say get a manual. I don't think it would be so bad for the commute, and it is true that the SS transmissions suck. I don't know about failure rates or anything, but I just don't like mine. But then again maybe the reason I hate mine so much is because i am modding it and the transmission is holding me back so much that I am going to swap it. But even though you are not planning to do any aftermarket stuff getting the manual will give you all of the benefits of a manual and still leave you some potential for the future.

lol, - i love my lude - but if you cant find a better deal - i'll drive down to texas and make an even trade with you

i agree with the point on deciding to not get a manual because of a commute is a bad choice - get the manual.

hmm, i was thinking about getting a S2k a few months ago and the insurance i was quoted for the S2k was the EXACT same for what i pay for my 98 prelude. Also im 19 and have about 4 speeding tickets, and i still would of paid $170 a month for insurance, but im under my parents name, i dunno if u have ur own insuarance or not.
