Default Tachometer Trouble

I just recently picked up a virgin 94 Si with only 80k miles. Previous owner was a woman, weekend driver. Everything is kosher except for one problem: I think something is up with the tach. Here are the syptoms: When Idling warm the tack will read 1000-1200 RPM (doesn't sound like it), and 2100ish when cold (once again doesn't sound like 2100 to me). I was on flat freeway, windows up, roof closed going 70, and the tach read 4K. So I accelerated to a steady 80, read 5K rpm. Let off and cruised at 60, then 55.... read 4k rpm. I "tached it out" and the fuel cutoff hit at 7200'ish. Does any of this sound normal? Lemme know if you need pictures, I'll get some tomorrow. Like I said none of the rpm's feel or sound as they read. Isn't idle supposed to be that first dash past the "0"? Oh and I love how the passenger side a/b takes away your glove box LOL. Other than that I love my bb4.

Photo @ cold-start. It sounds like 1000 or so RPM

Sounds about right, w/ the rev limiter and everything....if you want it to "sound like 1700rpms" remove the resonator box below the air filter (by going in through the passenger wheelwell, or just get a cold air intake) that'll make it sound louder @ rpm.

Well the problem isn't the sound. It's the tach saying 1000-1700 @ Idle. I am just wondering if that is correct. And as far as RPM per MPH I thought 4K at 70 MPH didn't sound correct. I know it's an Si and all. I did that resonator thing to my old CRX, pretty cool. I really don't feel like toying with my lude till I can afford to do it right. Not much for ghetto mods anymore.

It does sound like your rpm guage is off. At 60 you should be at 3K, 70 at 3500, 80 at 4000.

I am not sure what's causing it.

You actually have a BB2.

It is not uncommon to see a car in Cali have carpet covered dashes. It is to protect the dash since the sun is harsher on the cars out there.

The car came with the dash-mat. I took it off for a day, but the sunglare on it was killing me so I put it back on. If I ever mod my car It'll have to go, and I'll just have to put a duller finish on the dash.

So it's a BB2? What's a BB4?

Yea I am baffled as to why my tach is 800 or so revs off. Work M-F, and go the school in the eve, so I really don't have any time to take it by a shop.

If your car is running fine, I wouldn't worry about it. Wait until you are free.

Try this in the mean time. Have a friend/family member drive in their car next to you to make sure the MPH gauge is reading correctly too. I know your RPM guage is off definitely since it is reading high at idle, but I would check to make sure the MPH guage is fine.

BB4 is a VTEC Prelude. I always thought it was the JDM H22 Prelude. I know the USDM H22 Prelude is BB1. BB2 is the Si Prelude chassis. BA8 is the Prelude S.

Also, as you mentioned too, the carpet cover is also there to protect from the sun glare. I forgot to list that one.

Andy, do you have a full-swap, or a head swap in your car?
Yea I'm not gonna sweat it right now. It gets me from A-> B without trouble, so I'm not gonna worry.

i'm seem to have somewhat the same problem but i believe mine might be different though. I have a 93 Si w/ an H23a1 and i did the 94-96 EL gauge cluster swap, but with a VTEC EL cluster and not the Si cluster. Now the tachometer reads about 1000 RPM higher than it's suppose to.

For example, my car idles at about 1750 RPM instead of the usual 750 RPM. Also, when i put the key into in the on position (notch before cranking), the tachometer reads 1000 RPM even when the engine is off.

I'm pretty sure that if I swap out my engine with an H22 or swap the VTEC EL guage cluster with an Si EL gauge cluster, then my problem will be corrected.

Noting that you said that your lude is still a virgin, my problem is probably different.

At least you know that your tach is off. I wouldn't consider it problematic. My tach actually jumps around sometimes totally independent of the actual RPM, and sometimes it reads consistently high. From what I gather, it could be any number of things between the distributor and the guage itself, but I wouldn't worry about it.

Mine does the same thing as both of yours.
My E.L gauges are stock.

Maybe it's a problem with the gauges, seeing how we all have the same one. And Dan you have the same car as I do right down to the color. Do you have the crappy blue int?

Yeah, I thought the blue was kind of strange at first but now I think it's kind of cool just because it's different.
The EL guages probably are to blame. I had a 93 S before this and the non-EL guages were perfect. The speedometer was even accurate at 76 mph going past a roadside radar. I once heard of someone fixing a loosely connected wire behind an EL guage and fixing the tach problem, but that requires a teardown I'm too lazy to do.

By the time saturday rolls by, I as well am too lazy. As far as the blue: My last two cars have blue interior, so I'm kinda over it. But hey at leastI'm used to it.
