Re: smog questions
You've gotta be shitting me. I'm out of ideas. I've replaced everything, and drilled out the egr ports.
Something is causing a misfire the isn't throwing a CEL. Still. Somewhere. I'm out of ideas. I could do a leakdown. Or check if the o2 sensor is hashing. But ****!!!!! Please someone ideas? My shop wants $95 to diagnose it. I'm tempted to pay for work on my car for the first time in 10 years. But I don't wanna

Re: smog questions
Edit: I won't promote cheating the system in here. But I am still wanting to get this fixed and not sure what to do next beyond a leakdown test

Re: smog questions
Use the GTP stuff and or replace the O2 sensor and see what the hell happens you have some bad luck with this car should have passed by now, sorry you are going through so much **** with it.

Re: smog questions
Thanks dude! Yeah this is carrying on for awhile now. I'm still up at 1am researching lol. Lucky don't have clients til 9am tomorrow and it's Friday woot woot!
Yeah something is up. I used 89 octane on 4 gallons of gas and 2 bottles of iso heet in addition to the work I did since last test. Brought HCs down 45 PPM, which is more than the 39 PPM reduction the new cat and o2 did originally! I'm confounded. Lol
Its gotta be related to the cylinder that's at 205. Cuz the rest are at 250. Maybe a leaky seat or partially burnt valve, which might have happened when my throttle plate got stuck completely WOT that one time and I bounced off 8k rpm for a good 10 sec before I got my mind back and shut down the engine at over 120mph.
I wasn't planning to build the engine for another year so idk. I could run a leakdown and see where I'm at. Test fuel pressure and the o2 hashing (I'm starting to think my new bosch o2 sensor isn't working right so I ordered an ngk).
I think I may loosen the exhaust bolts just past the cat, go with 1 gallon of denatured alky to 2 gallons 87. But I'd like to avoid that fate.
Anyone have an smog experience that might be able to chime in why my HCS are still high, and why everything I've done hasn't solved it yet? 96 h22a. To recap, new: cat, o2, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, oil, oil filter, coolant, thermostat, cleaned egr valve, drilled egr ports out/cleaned, cleaned iacv and fitv, cleaned map sensor and checked tps.
Guy I trust at the shop puts his fingers on my valve cover at idle and says he can feel misfire. But no CEL. Fuel trims show running rich at low speed under load, which is another way of saying it's running lean potentially and the ecm is compensating with a rich mix.

Re: smog questions
Yay I found an exhaust leak on the downpipe. Prolly explains why I'm running rich at low speed.
Put my finger to the leak and it's sucking in air, however there is no carbon around the leak because it's only the outer shell of the double barreled pipe, and it's like a vacuum leak vs exhaust passing thru. The pipe, which I thought was welded at each end, appeantly isn't; I didn't think it was sucking in air.
4 bottles of iso heet and 1 gallon 89 and hope to pass tomorrow!

Re: smog questions
Stoked that you found a damn exhaust leak something had to give for your car to pass smog. I think you should be fine now with passing smog and if you do not pass smog tomorrow then welding the hole in your down-pipe should fix it for good. I know this has been a long time coming for you and you have been through hell and back with this entire smog ordeal. Keeping my fingers crossed for you, goodluck.

Re: smog questions
Well. It failed again. Welded the exhaust leak and used a half gallon of denatured alky with a gallon of 89.
Failed even worse than before. Nox went through the roof to 1200. HCs jumped to 190. Co went from .22 or .33 whatever to nearly .7
The guy legit feels bad for me and pretested it for free beforehand. He thinks it's a valve issue.
I ******* quit. This stupid ******* laws in this stupid ******* state and causing an engine that has never run better than it has been lately to not be registered while my car gets covered in smoke by a huge 18 wheeler on the way to the smog station.
I don't know what else to do. I'm not tearing the head down to replace valves over 60 hydrocarbons. Hell no. I doubt that's even my problem. 250 250 205 250 compression numbers can't fail smog.
I wonder if unplugging the ecu so it can reset and maybe change the fuel trims because it's stored memory is still causing it to run rich is viable.

Re: smog questions
I had a very similar issue. My HC were through the roof. I was running a jdm p30 ecu that was chipped, which had it running rich. It wasnt taking a feed back from the 02 sensor, just open loop. so it ran well at cruise speed, but at idle it ran so rich it was miss firing. brummm brum brum brum brummmm.. Pulled the chip out and put one in with factory settings and tada i passed. but dont throw parts at your car. Pin point diagnosis..

Re: smog questions
**** sorry to hear you failed again I would have just put the GTP stuff in there and see where it landed you. As for a valve issue you can adjust them if you have not already done so it takes 30 mins to do it. It for sure isn't your ecu causing you to fail. I think you have replace everything on the damn emission items except for the charcoal canister and purge valve solenoid which are not acting up, unless the canister is clogged or something so I am just as lost as you are on this issue.

Re: smog questions
No it's not chipped so I don't think that's it. At this point I don't even care if my new cat lasts past the eventual smog pass lol. Not expecting it for next time. Ha.
So that guaranteed to pass isn't just snake oil? Oh and yeah I did a valve adjustment already. I was referring to leaky valve seals causing oil into the chamber, thus, HCs.
I'm past just throwing parts at it though. The egr, which is a huge key to emissions, works fine. When applied vacuum at idle the engine stalls. Iacv, fitv also cleaned. So idk. Nothing to lose with guaranteed to pass additive lol.

Re: smog questions
Just use the GTP and see what happens I have read good reviews on it and follow the directions to a tee. You have replaced everything on your car except the charcoal canister with the evap purge solenoid so there is nothing left to do here.
