Default Shifting into 1st from cold start

So when I first start the car before going to work and shift into R and back out of the driveway, I have no problems.

However, when I try to shift from R into 1 (or from any gear into 1 for that matter), it feels really stiff and I have to shove it into place. Feels almost like I'm pushing it past something. No grinding or whining or anything, it really just feels like there is something in the way.

I have no problems shifting into any other gear from cold start, the rest of the shifts feel like butter, also, once the car gets going and warms up a bit (2min tops), the shifting into first goes away.

The possible failures prodded around by people I work with so far (they're not experts by any means):
-Transmission syncro out of whack
-hydraulic failure
-clutch disengagement failure
my question to them (and all of you wonderful people out there) is: for all of the above three problems, wouldn't that affect all shifts and not just the first 1 or 2 shifts into 1st gear?
