Default Shift Fork Issues

Yesterday I was driving when suddenly I couldn't shift anymore. Once getting home clutchless, I found that I could pull the clutch release fork out with my hand. Obviously the clip became detached. Is this fixable without tearing out the tranny. A friend told me I could just line the fork up with the bearing and it may work for a while, but not to expect it to last for long.

I say put that* friend right in your engine bay as you drive, and have him physically move your shift arm when you yell at him too!

edit* joking, I'm sorry! , I had 5 tall boys and was trying to be funny.
