Default replacing engine

alright. n00b question i know, don't yell at me.

friend has an 88 SI manual with 170k with a broken timing belt
my car is an 89 SI auto with 160K with a broken transmission

he's thinking of selling me his car. can i use my engine from my 89 and put it in the 88? in other words, can engines from automatics be put into manuals?

thanks

yes engines can be swapped from an Auto to a Manual and vice versa...I bought a motor that came out of an Automatic and went into my 5spd Prelude, and it works just fine
