Pulleys
I have a 97 prelude v tec and i have a intake and exhaust. i have about 1000 dollars to spend and i dont know what to get. do pulleys make a big difference? what brands are good and which pulleys should i replace. i know theire pretty cheap so i just wondering if it is worth it on a prelude? thanks for the help
Only the crank pulley helps. Dont touch the other cuz it will do nothing and just kill you battery. Happended me and my friend. Also see if the skunk manifold is out yet for our car, suppose to come out the 1st of April.
Pass on the crank pulley and alternator pulley. You might consider the AEM for the power steering. $1000 is a lot of money. If you're not going turbo or nos, you might consider cams, high compression or a hitech header.
So whats the dilly yo here, you guys saying that the aem pulley package is not worht it??? You get two pulleys with it right and belts. They claim it helps to get rid of parasitice effects on the engine. Does anyone have these on a 5th gen??? It should make the car run smoother no???? My opinion, I wannna get some but no one can say if they worth it or not...........
i personally did like the pullys on my 5gen. the high end felt smoother and i felt a small increase in power. i remeber seeing a dyno chart of a 5gen prelude who made 7hp after the pullys were installed, it was on preludeonline from a member called spanishricer i think. the pullys are worth it because i got them for 133 from a local shop so i think it was defeinatly worth it.

Why is that, why should pulleys affects and SS differently thant an SH ????

An SS lude loses more power through the torque converter than an SH would through the manual gearbox. Therefore any power you can steal back would be hugely noticeable.
i wouldn't get the pulleys for reasons mentioned above.
if you're looking to upgrade your power you should get a header such as smsp or mugen. that will cost you a little above a grand. or you could get a greddy header for about $400 but it would require a little work to make it fit on your 5th gen.
my recommendation however is you mod your suspension. you have just enough for tein ss coilovers. suspension mods will give you the most for your money.

I agree with this. For $133, the AEM kit is a good bang for the buck upgrade, especially if your just going to do bolt ons. Noticable throttle response improvement. As for the negatives mentioned, the only time you see any of these differences is if your sitting at a stoplight idling. Plus, it is a fairly easy installation, can be done in under an hour if you have an impact wrench, and remember, one of the accessories is reverse thread, it's been a while, so I forget which, help on that?

Can you expand on the.....only time you notice it is if you sittin at a stop light...........notice what.............????

A little dim of the headlights, or a tighter feeling steering, only when idling.
Because the pulleys will drive the alternator a little slower, not quite the same voltage is being sent to the battery. Once you get above 1500 rpms, no difference over stock. And for the power steering, remember, it is only power ASSIST, is only helps turn the wheel when your at a stop, like when parallel parking. Again, bump the throttle to bring the revs up a bit, to say 1500, and no difference over stock. As I said before, the only difference at that point is the improved throttle response. As mentioned, you'll get ~5hp out of this simple and cheap bolt on, not to mention new belts

I have the AEM Kit, I got the pullies and my intake put on at the same time so It was harder to notice the difference. I also have one 10'' Audibahn AW1000X with a Kenwood 600watt amp. I have had the pullies for about a year and a half, I like them. BUT when my original honda battery died I got the mid quality one at Autozone, it died in about 6 months, I went back to the honda battery(5yr warranty) and have had no problems for 5 months, but my sunroof closes REALLY slow, Hope this helps.
Personally if i had a $G to spend i would do suspension and get it chipped, that way your car will be ready for any future HP/TQ Mods. I once heard,
" if you can't get the power get the suspesion cause being consistant on turns is important too."

get a supsension, a really nice one. or just get VAFC, and cams, and cam gears if you can. then you can save up for a dyno tune. or you can get an okay suspension (500 ish for shocks and springs) then get some rotas. free shipping!
right now on modacar.com they have a special for a tokico set. spring and struts for about $420.00 or so..LOL 420

i can get the tein super streets for 950$, thats what i would get if i had a g to blow.......or if you want to go faster..... get a chip..... maybe a vafc?.....the options are endless with the amount of money you have.....other than a turbo that is
I knew a guy who did that, and he removed his PS for weight reduction. IMHO, why? Just do the simple kit, I have had no problems what so ever with anything electrical, no battery dying issues, no slow sunroof, nothing like that. And I have a dual amp, 3 sub stereo system in my car.
I have heard bad thing about running a light crank pulley as well. I am running an AEM underdrive kit on my 93 Si, bigger pulley's on the PS pump and alernator, the head lights dim a little at an idle but the alternator is still making more the 12 volts, so it isn't like the battery is going to go dead. Install we pretty easy, I think it was worth it for 150 bucks
