Default Overrevved

About a month or so ago, I over revved when down shifting. I went into second instead of 4th when getting of the highway. I went to about 8k rpm. What are usually the consequences of overrevving other than spinning bearings? Floating Valves? When I first start the car in the morning I can hear a sort of rattling noise coming from right side of the valve cover. Also, for a mile after warm up, I get sort of metal rattling noise from the car when driving. Can't figure out what I did. The engine is an H23a and has 58k miles on it. It was in absolute beautiful condition. Smoother than beyond belief. Now it seems a little harsh mainly around 2k-3k rpm. Whats going on with the car? Thanks for all replies.

you basically have it... bearings and valve float.. I would do a valve adjustment and a compression test and be more carefully to not misshift. Like me, I mean I have never ever done that (hey I've never done it on purpose anyway)

i would do a leakdown test and a valve adjustment
did you push the clutch back in immediately after you
misshifted? you said your getting a rattleing noise when driving,
is this at a certian rpm, if so, you might have an exhaust rattle

sonofabitch .. thats what my cars been doing since I got it .. .

BUT .. it still drives like a champ . just with crappy mileage and not the most wonderous accelleration as an enginet hat isn't as tired..

I agree with Sephro though ... sounds like thats whats happend.. too bad you had such low k's, I'd say H22 swap .. though you could get a used H23/H22 longblock ..

I did immediately go into neutral. In fact couple of days ago I took it to the dealer. One ofthe mechs. took it for a test drive and said the engine felt tight. This was after the 60k mile serviice which included a valve adjustment. How are much leakdown tests normally? Maybe I got lucky with minimal damage...
