Looks like tapping noise is in valve train - advice?
Been posting here several times on a tapping noise in the morning on cold start that goes away after it warms up. I was thinking maybe in the timing cover area since I just had that worked on. Anyways, I took it to a honda specialist - from what I hear they are pretty good, if not better than the "stealer". They needed the car overnight (1998 Honda Civic Vtech) and have determined it was in the valve cover - they actually determined that yesterday - needed the car overnight to do a valve adjustment on cold. So they adjusted the valves and it still makes the noise. I called the service guy and he said right now they are cooling the engine down (fans etc) to readjust the valves. He did say they were 100% sure its in the valve train. I wonder if it is a LMA??? I mentioned that but he was not aware of it (counter guy) and said he would pass the info onto the tech. Right now they are charging ~$100.00 for the valve adjustment - not too bad.
My questions is, if it is the LMA do I really have to replace them out if the noise goes away? Second, do you have to pull the timing and all that **** off again (which adds up in $$$$$$$$$$) to do the LMA's? Finally, what does it run for an LMA job????
If its too expensive and it looks like its not a big deal I may just live with the noise. Thoughts? Thanks!!!!!!!!!
Also, are LMA's basically lifters??? Are there lifters on this engine? I've hydraulic lifters on older cars loose oil in the mornings, make some noise and then when the pump up it goes away....

Thanks but that sounds like dual cam? I only have the single cam on my 1998 Honda Civic. Does the cam need to come out? Does it even matter if the LMA's make noise? Its not like I race this thing, basically a daily driver. Thanks again!

The lma's are just a 'cushion' for the non-vtec rocker arm to rest on while not in vtec. The sound may be annoying but in all honesty EVERYTHING I have read states they being bad will not effect or damage any other valvetrain. The cam does not need to come out. Replacing single cam lma's is a less pain than doing so on a dual cam...here are some pics of a single cam lost motion assembly

OH, thank JESUS!!!!!!!!!!!! So you do not have to pull the cam or timing belt??? Also, since this is single over head cam, would the LMA's be suspect for making a ticking noise???? Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!

...and those pics are for a 1998 honda civic vtec engine single cam? I don't recall seeing that top assembly you show in the picture???? Thanks again!

It may look like the pics above, will have to pull the cover when I get home. Does anyone know the torque specs for those bolts and roughly how much the LMA's would cost? Thanks again!

motor in pics is a d16y8...if you believe your head looks like the ones in the pics you linked than you dont have a d16y8 you have a d16y7. Go look at the engine code on your block and the circled yr on your head. You may have a y8 block y/ a y7 non-vtec head which means you dont even have lma's

Yes...they are the same design as in most vtec motors. The are just like a strut. Over time the oil polishes them causing them to stick loosing that cushion. Some believe they get clogged w/ dirty oil but thats a bunch of crap

Its a 1998 Civic EX, looking online it looks like it is a D16Y8. So given that I must have Vtec? If so, does anyone know what the cost, and bolt torque specs for that assembly?

Read the code on the block beside the exhaust manifold? Im only familiar with Canadian cars, where the Si has the d16y8, and the SiR has the b16a2. Im not sure which american trim came with the y8. Does your motor have a vtec solenoid on the head?

Checked with the dealer by vin and they said it does have vtec. They want $55.00 a pop WOW!!!! Part number is 14820P2J010 anyone know of a LMA that will work but cheaper? Thanks again!
Yes, the motor does have the spool valve on the head. It looks like I have the B16Y8 block.

$55.00 a piece seems right...you know what will fix noisy lma's thats a whole lot cheaper?
slap a fart can on it
dont sweat it...every vtec motor I have had had the infamous "vtec tick". Doesn't effect anything, just can be annoying.

Ok, thanks again!!! If I do decide to replace them does that mean I need to get my valves readjusted again? Because they just did that today... also where would I find torque specs for those bolts/LMA assembly? Thanks again!

Re: Looks like tapping noise is in valve train - advice?
Mechanic just called back, said it sounds like #3 or #4 LMA is making the noise. He wanted to know if it was ever starved for oil or overheated on me. I told him no, never has and I use sythetic oil. So is an LMA failure indicative of oil starvation? Its never been run without oil nor overheated. Its been a great car. He now has me wondering... thanks again!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks again on the valve issue. I'll probably order them from Majestic and do the work myself. Does not look that hard to do. This mechanic also told me that someone put the o-ring things for the sparkplug tubes in backwards, and he fixed that. ****ing mechanic who worked on this previous was an IDIOT!!!!!!!!!!

No, you adjust your valve lash with a warm engine... when all metal is expanded, and so it's even tighter when it contracts again...
