Default overheating question

first off i searched and read the post recently about overheating.

my question/problem is this. car runs fine but when im sitting at like a drive through the temp will go up and up all the way b4 the red on gauge. but when i start driving it goes back down to half way mark? i cleaned/flushed/changed coolant still does it. when is the fan supposed to kick on? could it be the fan switch? thermostat? the cap and hoses i think are ok. any help would be greatly appreciated.

edit: if i were to buy a new thermo and fan switch should i buy oem or something like mugen?

Usually when this happens you are low on coolant. When at a stop, the temp in the engine bay and the temp of the coolant rise, thus causing the gauge to go up.

When you are moving, air is rushing into the radiator and cooling what little coolant is in the system. Do you have a pinhole leak in your radiator or any of your hoses ? Are you topped off for coolant ?

no leaks. radiator was filled to the brim just 2 days ago. only leak i noticed was like 3 little drops when i bleed the system but i think that may have just been leftover coolant on the drain pecock falling off. once it cools off i will go check the level

i also had this same problem in my lude (92 with jdm h22a) i replaced the engine coolant temperature sensor and thermostat and added new fluid and so far it hasnt overheated at a sit still *yet*. i just did it on saturday and drove all weekend with no sit still traffic but we'll have to see after work in traffic today

not to thread jack, but how do you know when you have enough fluid in the system?

how old is your waterpump? and yeah, it's always better to go with mugen, as long as u buy it new, there are some shady fools out there who will just stick an oem thermostat in the mugen box...

I would say its one of the fan switches as well. If it were the waterpump I think it would be overheating constantly. Also make sure there are no air bubbles in your system.

i took radiator cap off and the coolant level was lower then where i filled it so i topped it off...cant find the leak if there if one. but i let car idle for 10 mins fan never came on. so i revved it up and let sit again fan still never came on. so i guess im gunna order the mugen thermostat and switch from kingmotorsports so i know its real and hope it fixs it. also are ne coolant temp sensors good brand wise? should i buy oem honda?

edit: spoon or mugen thermostat?

i had the exact problem in my 92' it was fine all over, but then when i sat at idle for awhile it would over heat. i figured it was the fan switch then i checked the fuse box under the hood and low and behold, the fuse(s) for the fans were blown. replaced them and havent had the problem since.

1) check the fuses
2) check the switchs, the shop manual explains how i believe if you can get ahold of one. if not pm me and ill scan the page for ya

any one ever had issues with vtec engagement with a spoon or mugen thermo? due to not reaching "normal driving temps"?

it looks like the spoon is fully open sooner then the mugen. spoon operating temp is 65 and fully open at 70. mugen is 68 and fully open at 81. any one got input on if spoon will have an impact on vtec engagement? since i read stock operating temp is ~80 fully open ~90
