Default noise from engine

I have a 93 si and I can't figure out what this loud whining noise is coming from the engine. I have heard of others having this problem also. It isn't any of my accessories. Sounds kind of like a supercharger. Anybody?

It could be that your timing belt is loose or too tight, mine has done it before as well on my 5th gen, and it was the timing belt.....

Check to see if all your belts are on tight enough, or they may be too tight...Your power steering belt, and your alternator belt, if its neither, then it may be your timing belt

Mine started doing that after I changed my timing belt. The balance shaft belt was really loose when I took it off. I think I tightened it to much when I put it back on.

It isn't powersteering belt or any thing. I've had all belts off except the two timing belts and it still does it. I had to do some head work on the car and may have them too tight. So if it is the timimg belt, then eventually it should stretch out, right? Or did you have to go back and loosen it?

I have the same whine you are talking about. My timing belt is hydraulic tensioned and my balance belt is spring tensioned. So on my car there is no way to adjust the belts. I've talked to several Honda mechanics and everyone has told me the same thing "Its normal". Just do yourself a favor and after about 2-300 miles pull the timing cover and look for abnormal wear on the belts. If there is no abnormal wear then don't worry about it.

Forgot to add that the whine on my car did not start until I put in a new timing belt, timing belt tensioner, and balance belt.

By "Its normal", are they saying it will eventually go away? I am almost totally convinced it is the timing belt. I don't have new tensioners but I did repack them with grease. The only thing that makes me doubt is that when the car idles, it is not a smooth whine, it kinda has a pulsating sound to it, but I jsut about sure it is the belt.

It will get lighter in sound as miles go by, but it will not go away. If you listen to any DOHC Honda motor the whine is there just not as noticeable as what you are experiencing right now. I have had mine on now for about 400 miles and it still whines, however there is no abnormal wear on the belts. I just listened to a 1998 Prelude with the H22A4 on Saturday and the whine was there just not very noticeable. Unless you have abnormal wear, this is my opinion, I would not worry about it. If you are too worried about it my recommendation would be to take it to a Honda Dealership and have a reputable mechanic look at it.
