Nitrous
So I just ordered a new nitrous wet kit from NX. has anyone ever used nitrous? whats this biggest shot i should use? Should I get a set of wires?
my car is as follows:
01 Prelude
DC Headers
DC Exhaust
AEM CAI
AEM Tru-Power Pullies
Unorthodox Pullies
Skunk2 Camgears

saw this in a guys sig last night:
Nitrous is like a hot girl with an STD... you want to hit it, but you're afraid of the consequences...
In short, you better keep up on the up-keep of the effects of shooting NOS. or else... say bye-bye to that engine, buddy.
and that is why i haven't run nitrous.. like most people.

i am running nitrous and my car has now spun a rod bearing. i only sprayed it about 9 times. i was on a 50 wet shot. i know of guys that used to run 75 wet shots without any problems. its fun to have but for a little more money you mine as well just boost it or port and polish the head. thats my .02 cents.

up keep meaning keeping up on your motor.. like rods and bearings and pistons etc... the valvetrain. i'm no nitrous expert, but i do know that it strains a motor VERY bad.. just boost, with a good tune, at a low psi, on stock internals... my .02 as well.

the garage told me today what it would be worthless to go boost on a stock motor, that if i only ran like 7-9 lbs it wouldnt build boost and something about the inside of the motor is coated in something and the block couldnt handle it. . . true/false?
yea i would like to know as well why you spun a bearing...
what precautions did you use when you started using nitrous...
for me..im running zex...wich is a really safe kit..not to hard core...kicks in gradually...not like NOS or NX...
i changed my plugs, for colder ones...
when i know i will use it..and thats really on occasion...i will be sure to use some 94 octane...and i change my oil every 5000km (yea im in canada)...
but i still would like to know if some precautions where taken or none at all...because its not fare to say i fuked my engine up with nitrous..if you just slapped on a kit and hoped it would work fine for ever..

i'm no nitrous expert but from what i've heard from a LOT of ppl is not what you just said. nitrous may "shock" the transmission and clutch but doesn't put anymore strain on the motor then if you gained 50 hp with a turbo kit. (so long as you take the necessary precautions)
and i seriously doubt that nitrous (small shot) is going to have that big of an effect on your rod bearings. if that were true, everyone with high torque numbers would have bearing problems. maybe if you shot the nitrous at to low of an rpm, then it might cause problems, as that will cause radial clearance between the bearing and journal to get too low, possibly causing metal to metal contact
where's nxlude to chime in when you need him.

i actually ran the nx kit, it was good for awhile, the main problem i have is if i had an option to go bigger i would, that could also be a problem with anyone, but in my case i burned third gear and crank walked. so i would only use it if you have enough self control

then when wouldd be a good rpm range to hit it?

maybe im retarded but shouldnt there be some type of tuning with a nitrous setup? i personally wouldnt want to just slap one on my car and use it unless it was somehow setup with my car.
please enlighten me, because i know nothing about nitrous..

Any off the shelf kit you get is designed to be plug and play. Zex, NX, NOS, all of them. If your motor is health and up to the challenge and its tuned well already then you can ust slap it right on. Tuning is only needed in more radical situations.

Most importantly, if you are asking questions like this then DONT PUT IT IN YOUR CAR! Take a week or too and research everything you can about nitrous and your applcation. If you dont know anything about what the hell your doing then you are way likely to break something big. Unless you can really say you know about nitrous then you shouldnt be running it. It has to be done right to be all it can.

well, they're are limits that you could calculate using bearing design equations. however, getting the information for all these bearings and testing the viscosity of your oil is to much of a pain in the ***. most ppl just sort of choose a rpm within reason.
anybody that actually runs nitrous wanna give some ranges? i would suspect between 4 and redline would be good.

well the garage is retarded. any good running honda motor can handle up to 8 psi. safely and reliably, provided u have it tuned. this means no fmu's. only upgraded injectors, fuelpump, and a tuning session. if properly tuned i would run 5 psi. daily and maybe 7 if u hit the track, or if a v-ate gets next to u. u could control this with a boost controller. oh and there is no reason that this shouldnt be as reliable as any factory turboed car.

HAHA!
But in all seriousness, like NXlude said, nitrous does not blow motors. It finds the weakness and exploits it. I ran an NX 75 shot through my stock internal jdm h22a for 2 years, NUMEROUS bottles went through that motor. Not one problem to this day. If you know how to use it, then it'll last and it'll be a hell of a ride.
If you don't know how to install it, I wouldn't suggest running it.

You haven't ran nitrous and yet you say things like this. I have been running an 1XX shot and i leave on drags on 1800 - 2100 depending on situations track street blah blah blah. And have never had a bearing failure from leaving @ low RPM. Its an AFC car with sum junk parts I put together I had laying around in the basemeant, until I finish my turbo car I hope to have out this year.
F.Y.I the car is not slow (13.13 @82 mph do the math
) It's most likely faster on drags with me hitting the brakes to not show my real times @ the track then 90% of the preludes are on this board would do on full passes on slicks. I know nitrous and know how to make it work.
IMO preludes H22/H23's love nitrous if applied correctly just as NX lude stated.

My younger cousin who also has a Prelude wants to run nitrous on his car. He only wants a 40 shot because he doesnt want a high amount of risk. Can I please have some recommendations on which brand? He is graduating this spring and I will get it for him as a gift.

40shot? High ammount of risk? What year prelude what motor? 50shot(NX, NOS 55(ZEX) is more then safe. Just make sure its setup correctly you can toast a motor on a 40 as well if it is not installed or jetted correctly ect ect ect

^Exactly.^ Have a compression test done 1st, address your ignition(1 step colder plugs), when was the last time you changed your plug wires? Go w/MSD & if you have some extra cash, an MSD Blaster coil too. The things to fear when sprayin' is: low octane fuel + poor ignition= detonation, especially w/bad compression #'s.
I've gone thru countless bottles in the last 2 yrs on my ZEX 55-shot(dry), no problems. I don't spray til 3rd gear @ WOT. If you know your gonna spray, add a couple of bottles of octane booster w/Premium gas or a gallon or two of race fuel....just my .02
