Newbie prelude owner w/ a Newbie list of questions...
Just bought a 93 VTEC, 130k miles, Green, flawless, 68-year-old guy was the only owner, never modded, never raced, I think it still has the original clutch.
I've been in the motorcycle business for 7yrs, so I know how to turn a wrench. But don't know JACK about honda cars, and I've learned that if you don't know WTF you're doing, defer to those who do.
Which leads me to:
1.) What are the most important PMs for me to do immediately?
2.) What PMs should I think about doing a little down the road?
3.) What should I look out for as far as stuff that habitually goes wrong around this mileage and in the next 50k miles or so?
Pics to be posted next week.

depending on when the guy last changed the timing belt you may want to do the manual tensioner swap becuase the h22 auto tensioners have been known to fail.

1. timing belt first. coolant, fuel filter, radiator hoses, k&n drop in panel air filter, pcv, oil, cap, rotor, plugs, wires. and if you mean preventative maintenance, just follow the service manual and mileage intervals.
2. belts, transmission flush and fill, some sort of injector cleaner (i like the redline fs-1)
3. that damn autotensioner...
and welcome!

Re: (iakona)
I'd do the basic stuff, plugs, cap, rotor.
Then fluids - oil, coolant. (depending on when the last owner had that done.
Timing belt, water pump, etc needs to be done every 7yrs or 90k.
O, and a wash and wax

Were the manual ones standard on later models? Should I order an OEM one from the dealer? And, if so, what year do I want to order?

I don't have a svc. manual. I'm going to buy a Haynes one later today, unless there's a better one out there.
Thanks for the welcome

your manual tensioner is actually going to come from a 4th gen 92-96 prelude H23 Si non-VTEC model. and it is actual an amalgam of parts that are available separately. gotta love honda.
here is the link that 2point6 put together that pretty much covers everything.

as for manuals, yeah, haynes is okay, but you can order the official honda service manuals from http://helminc.com. you need the manual, and the etd (electronic troubleshooting guide). that should give you enough reading to tide you over.

Haynes shows pics of installs, which is helpful. But if your decent w/ a wrench, the Helms is 1,000x better (more detailed).

"Get Turbo"
No kidding, right? I don't know when or why it happened, but proper spelling/grammar has gone right out the window.
Anyways, those seem like the PMs I figured would be most important (water pump, timing belt, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, oil & filter change, coolant flush, trans. fluid flush) but I'm glad I've learned about the manual belt tensioner and the wash & wax is a good idea, too.
Can you guys think of anything else to look out for? Wheel bearings? Weak electrics? I pick up the car on Wed. and I'm really stoked.

Re: (Sober_John)
You will probably have some trouble wit the climate control unit in the dash. It's very common for one of the connections on the circuit board inside to fail causing the AC not to work, lights go off etc... There is lots of info on how to fix this and a search should bring up most of it.
DEFINATELY order a Helms manual if you want to work on the car!
You may want to check for any trouble codes even if there's no check engine light just for the hell of it. There's a lot of sensors that all play a part keeping the car running good.
Might also want to run some Sea Foam through it to clean it out.

Then get turbo, HA!

What's Sea Foam? Is that like steam cleaning the upholstery or what? Or did I just make a fool of myself and it turns out Sea Foam is some kind of special Honda engine juice?

It can be found at any auto parts store.
You suck it up in to the IM and leave it in the engine for 5 mins after you shut it off and it dissolves all the carbon build up. Then you turn the car on and all the crap blows out the exhaust. Anyhow, it has instructions on the can....

Re: (Hawkze_2.3)
Okay,
I bought the following:
spark plug wires
spark plugs
cap
rotor
water pump
timing belt
oil & filter
air filter
that should do it for a tune-up. I am, however, unable to open the page that has the instructions on the auto-manual tensioner swap. I've found OEM replacement auto-tensioners on ebay and i've also found OEM replacement manual tensioners from an H23.
After how long do the stock auto-tensioners tend to fail?

it depends. i put in cams and went through 3 in a matter of 2 months.
stock, they are [i]supposed]/i] to last the length of your timing belt change.
