Default N/A forum sucks: Prelude : h22a1 rebuild ?'s

Hey my compression is shot in 1 cylinder (140) the rest are 200.. on my h22a1 with 133k miles... I think i am going to rebuild the bottom end as well as the top.
I purchased a JG engine dynamics head used (10k miles) and just brought it to the machine shop were it got cleaned up (hot tanked, all valves resurfaced) My mods will include:

HEAD IS OFF PICS BELOW!
PROGRESS:

JG head
Crower springs
Crower retainers
Crower valves
Crower/Skunk 2 stage 2 cams (Which should i go with)
Adj cam gears (which should I go with
Apexi Short ram intake
Megan racing header w/ 2.25 collector mod
2.25 exhaust (crush bent )
2.25 test pipe
2.36 rsr axleback exhaust (exmag)
NGK blue wires
Uberdata p28 will be the tuning on a dyno
Removed Intake Manifold butterflies (not sure if i should do it)
Hondata intake manifold gasket
OEM headgasket, timing belt, waterpump, balance belt

C+R Radiator
JUN flywheel
Exedy Clutch
Driveshaft shop axles
NO AC

What to buy?

type s or stock OEM pistons + rings?
do i need new rods?

What else would u reccomend? This car needs to be daily drivable for the most part..

i would leave them, since this will be a daily driven car, you will want some low end power as well. there is a thread on here that has some charts/graphs that prove the low end will benefit from having functional butterflies.

ones with 6 bolts or more. i don't actually know if they make gears with more than 6 bolts. my friend had his 4 bolt cam gears tuned and they had changes about 2 degrees after about 6 months. and they were torqued to spec!

why not go with an obd1 gsr p72? it will operate with the butterflies, whereas a p28 will not. but thats if you do decide to keep the butterflies.

There is a tsb for the balance shaft seal moving foward and leaking. Mine bolted into the oil pump housing and cam with a free oil dipstick o-ring.

Crower stage 2, Skunk2 or AEM gears, keep the butterflies, and Type S pistons+rings

P28s can be made to do the IAB thing...

BDL has new cam gears that are now available. Bdl used to be known as STR.

Get a better exhaust. On my old H22 I got 5ftlbs of midrange torque switching from my POS 2.25" crush-bent EX to open header. I would go with 2.5" IMO.

Keep the butterflies, I would go with Crower 2's without the stock idle lobes. There is almost no lope at idle and is nothing to worry about.

Feather fire is right. P28's can be made to operate IABs. I know because I am running mine like that.

Type S pistons over the original ones any day. Your H22A1 rods will have to be honed out and rebushed to accept the Type-S floating pin or get some H22A4 used rods from FleaBay.

The DDS axles are really unnecessary unless you have some really messed up ones now.

i would just make sure they are of good manufacture before you buy....

get type s pistons, and see if you can get a euro r intake manifold on there....

cp4you put up his dynapack dyno today of his R&d dyno ported head, skunk stg2 cams, euro r im and 64mm tb, with type s pistons and a hytech header, 233whp and 175wtq....thats awesome, especially for a dynapack....

but i have yet to see any evidence as to which is better....any usable evidence that is....

Yeah, those cam gears look nice, Im thinking about buying a pair. I wish someone had reviews on them.

Id go with the Skunk 2 Stage 2 cams if I were you, I had a set, and loved 'em.
Go with Autozone Axles, theyll replace them for free if you break 'em.
Look into a Stage 3 or so Clutch. You'll never go back.

But yeah, everything else looks like some good choices. Good luck with the build.

be very careful with aftermarket valves, as they often cause clearance issues..
