Minor Rust Issue
I have a few small rust spots.... one on the trunk lid where it meets the weather stripping when its closed, and the other is on that little round track guide on the driver's window (the plastic cap thing is gone)
I want to handle this before it gets too outta control. The one on the trunk is where no one will see if the trunk's closed so i was going to just paint over it. My question is can i just sand all the rust off and paint it with some Rustoleom or something and be fine, or is their another step i need to take to prevent this from coming back?

if you sand to metal use primer sealer then reg primer then u can paint it and it wont come back as long as the primer sealer is layered by primer but primer will come off with water so you have to keep using primer untill its painted
well u cant just sand of rust if it went all the way through. if it did u have to make patch panel to replace the rusted area if it went through that mean cut out the rust and weld in the new piece grind ur weld smooth and apply bondo or polyester puddy adn then ur sealer, perimer and the paint
Its not rusted all the way through. The roughest grit of paper i have lying around at the moment is 320 and i've gotten down to the bare metal for most of it. I just didn't know if there's some special treatment needed to finish the process. I have a wire brush that i'll take to it when i have some more time.
I'll try to find a garage to paint in when i'm ready since i'd hafta leave the trunk open. Anyone know of a good brand of primer sealer to use?

After sanding the rust til you cant see it, the area still has to be chemically cleaned. One microscopic spec of rust dust and it'll be back. Hit it with some rust converter or etching primer. Then add your paint. I like using cardboard with a hole cut out so I only get spray where I want it. Then pull it back a bit to help blend the color into your existing paint. Thats the cheap and easy way.
I will take you up on that chemical treatment though.
Here's the way it stands now after less than a minute of sanding with 320 grit paper. I'll work on finishing the prep later this week.

Bad, Bad idea if you plan on painting over it. Bodyshop I worked at banned aerosol lubes and even armor all. One spec will ruin your day!
SixxT9: Thats plenty good for chem treating now. Reason I don't use tape for that is because it'll leave a line and could pull paint up with it.

Several years ago I dremeled out my RR 1/4 rust hole. Sprayed it with Rust-Oleum primer, and they with Rust-Oleum Black. It hasn't gotten worse......I would have to guess I was lucky to get all of the rotted metal out.
i have the same problem. got 4 pretty holes rusted all the way through. but instead of welding new metal in i just got some fiberlass and patched it up with the cloth then added extra to kinda give it the shape of the body. then sanded it down to better match the body but it was still uneven so i got spotting putty and filled in the little valleys and made it smooth. then just primered it and some paint that matches to color code form autozone and i can't even tell it was there
I was thinking about sanding it down until all the rust is visibly gone, then doing some type of chem treatment... then filling it back in with JB Weld or something. Because of the location i don't care if the color doesn't match, but i'm sure i could paint over the JB Weld with the proper prep anyway.
Any thoughts?

As long as the rust doesn't go all the way through the metal, just get rid of any rust scale and treat the rest. Never tried to paint over JB. As long as the etching primer goes on and stays on you shouldn't have a problem with the paint sticking.
Hardwhite2: The main thing you want to do, whether you fill with metal or glass, is cut out the rusted areas. Even if the rust is totally encased with fiberglass it will still rust and the body work will eventually chunk out.
Rustolium works really well. I've used it quite a bit to touch up undersides of hotrods. I'll even use nozzles from other buzz cans to get the right coverage and blend. Just be sure to paint a test area to make sure it doesn't make the stock paint bubble up or anything. Spray several dry coats and finish it with one good wet coat. Hope this helps
