Default LSD Installation

Does anybody have a link on how to install an LSD into an H22 tranny? How do you remove the ball bearings from the ends of the stock differential? I'm installing the OBX LSD, so any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Rob

I'd suggest looking in the Helms manual. It outlines the installation procedure in fairly good detail.

You won't want to reuse the bearings on the stock diff, they usually get tweaked when removing them. When you replace the diff and/or bearings, you'll also need to adjust the preload on the diff so it's within spec.

I've installed 6 or 7 LSDs in Preludes, and I haven't had one come back yet!

Thanks man. So you're saying to just break the bearings off and buy new OEM ones from Honda? Does Honda stock diff. bearings?

Honda can get them in stock for you. Typically both diff bearings run about $70 bucks and you press them onto the diff.

orly? yarly.

This sucks because I had the 5th gear syncros overnighted so I could have my tranny back together tomorrow, and now I find, it wasn't even worth it considering I need new bearings if I want to put the LSD in. Grrrr. And since we have some tranny GURUS in here, I'm going to drop a question on you guys.

The original reason on my tranny being out is that somehow reverse is locked out, meaning I couldn't shift into reverse from 3rd, neutral, 5th...nothing. We checked the syncros on the mainshaft and the teeth on the one gear were worn pretty bad. You couldn't really line up the gear w/ the selector ring. So, I'm hoping this is the problem, otherwise I may just flip the 'F' out. Wish I had pics.

Oh, and is it true you should replace the LSD bolts with Loctite bolts?

Did you miss 5th gear? Sometimes this will lock out your reverse gear by bending the shift fork. Believe it or not, I did this, lol.

I did not use loctite on the final gear. I do not believe the helms calls for it.... but if it does then I did use it, hehe.

LOL...the fork wasn't bent...can you drive up to Greensburg, PA and help? I hate messing around with this freaking transmission!!! I'll find out tomorrow, we're putting the tranny back together. Maybe my Honda dealer stocks diff. bearings...yeah right...oh well, I'll keep you posted...

Thanks again,
Rob

I doubt they keep them in stock... we usually have to order them.

BTW, what axles do you run? I have a 94 Civic, and I run the H22 halfshaft with 90-93 Integra axles. Thinking of going with a 90 Accord halfshaft with the 90-93 Integra axles so I don't hafta swap CVs everytime I change an axle.

The shims are not usually stocked. Once you get the bearings on the diff, you'll have to check the preload and adjust accordingly by using shims.

Do not reuse the bearings, only use new ones.

If you change anything on the mainshaft, like the synchro hub, gears, etc. the end play will need to be readjusted (with shims) back to stock specs. I did this when I rebuilt the transmission (new synchros) in the track car.

Well, isn't this nice. We get everything put back in the tranny, go to bolt the case on, and realize there's a nice crack about 4 inches long on the case. Take it to a local shop to see if they can TIG weld it, but they say it will just melt it. JB Weld? I'm so close to buying a new tranny. Just sucks cuz I had new 5th gear syncros overnighted to my house for nothing!
