Idling fluctuating, only SOMEtimes problem starting (?)
For the past week my automatic 1992 2.2 VTEC has been acting strange, sounds like I'm revving the car up & down when it is in neutral/PARK, when I'm nowhere NEAR the accelerator. When I put it into DRIVE it's fine again...
Also: only in this last week, have problems starting sometimes. When I turn ignition engine turns but it doesn't TAKE/FIRE. Then I leave it for 30 min or so and it starts normally again. This happens randomnly, no pattern that I can detect.
Had it at workshop, of course, murphy's law, it started etc there, didn't play up, so they could find nothing wrong.
Ideas??

Belly is right, the main relay is going out on you, that will fix the intermittent starting.
The bouncing idle is most likely due to the Fast Idle Thermal Valve, search archived threads under my name or look in the faq, I made a thread on how to diagnose these problems.

so the starting problems happen even after you've been driving it? Like for instance you leave, park it at a store, and when you come out it wont fire up?

for me, i had the crazy idle because the throttle body was letting in too much air. this confused the ecu. i tried to tighten the idle screw but it didn't make enough of an adjustment so i had to mess with the screw that allows the throttle body to sit flush with the throttle bore.
