Default H22 swap running a p14 ecu?

ok, i have a friend running an h22 swap in his car but he's running a p14 ecu. i know the p14 is from the h23's but i hear that if you run it, vtec will not engage, but for some reason his vtec works fine(kicks in at 5500rpms). can the p14 be hurting his performance even though vtec works fine or should he switch over to a p13? BTW how can you tell the difference between an ecu for an automatic and a manual transmission.

Hmmmm, are you sure you're not hearing the IAB (secondary intake runner), instead of actual VTEC? Both P13 and P14 can control IAB's.

BTW, my VTEC kicks in @ 5k rpms.

If you download this vid http://satan.higginstribe.com/satan_dynorun.mov

You can hear the secondaries open before VTEC, it's nearly as loud as a VTEC engagement, but not quite...

On an H23 (P14) they open at 4800, so he could just be thinking that's it...

Hey, do you happen to have a dynochart of that run? I want to see the curve, and see if there's a big change when the IAB's open up.

As you can see, at 4600 the hp starts a more steep raise, and the torque starts going up again. You can see honda chose it at the right point to conserve torque

Sweet! What were your mods during that particular run? This is before the 2.3/VTEC, correct?

on the sticker on the top of the ecu that has big numbers like "390" and numbers that say somthing like "37820-P13-###" if you see right under the last three "###" there should be some thing that says J-AT or J-MT ( the "J" can be other letters or numbers) The AT= Automatic and the MT= Manual. Also if the second number in the "###" is a 5 then that also means it could be an Auto.

For example:
37820-p13-900 = AUTO
551 J-AT

37820-p13-000 = MANUAL
551 J-MT

Correct me if im wrong anyone.

if it is p14 it shouldnt kick in the vtec. He should get a p13 ecu.

ok, now my friend is running a p13 ecu and the car feels good, one of our friends let us borrow his p13 with a mugen program and the car felt strong! my friend plans on reprogramming his ecu but doesn't know weather to get a mugen program or spoon program? which do you recommend prospeed?

I personally like the Spoon Spec program. Its great for bolt-ons and a set of cams. We have seen about 4 to 5 Hp across the powerband. Let me know if you want the upgrade i can give you a Honda-tech discount!
