H22 hesitating at lower rpm's...getting worse, PLEASE HELP!
i have a 95 vtec prelude with 148k and i take great care of it, i change my oil every 1500 miles, i recently changed my fuel filter, my air filter is decent. about 2000 miles ago i changed my spark plugs and distibutor cap. but i didnt change my wires or rotor because the wires were like 75 and i couldnt get the screw for my rotor out. the car was running fine and really strong and all of a sudden it started to bog down and hesitate when i put it in 2nd for example and step on the gas... the gear engages but it takes a while for the power to kick in. and its not just in second it can be in 1st or 3rd too. do you think it could be the wires or rotor even though the car ran fine for a while without them or maybe i couldve sucked up a little water because i did go over a big puddle like a week ago but i didnt notice anything different for a couple days. thanks in advance...also the car was blowing a little black smoke so i did a big fuel system cleaning and had the same problem. not a lot of black smoke but a little at high rpms. also i tried changing my header and cat, i put an ebay header on with a high flow cat...but i still have an exhaust leak, ya think an exhaust leak could cause it to hesitate like that?

I remember when i had my h22 swapped sol i was always having problems, probaly because it was an older h22, like a 91... anyways i this is what i would check.
plugs
wires
cap/rotor
check cells
If this motor is in another car eg. has a smaller radiator see if its running worse because of heat.
o2 sensor
check timing
see if the motor is being grounded good enough **
make sure your running 91+octane
umm, vacuum leaks are a huge one.
I once went mad trying to figure out why the motor wasn't running good for like 4months and finally found out that a screw on the tb was loose
Other than that, pull the plugs and see what they look like.

maybe i'll pickup a set of spark plug wires and an o2 sensor... you think that should solve the problem? thanks

also try resetting your ecu, either by unplugging the ecu or disconnecting your battery... I had the same problem, and this worked.

does it hesitate at very high rpm's also?
i went through changing plugs, wires, cap, and rotor.......only to discover it was my ignitor going bad. Ended up buying a whole new distributor b/c the ignitor is so expensive you might as well replace everything

Re: (Silver Surfer)
just replaced my wires, it's a little better but its still doing it. i did notice that my resonator is cracked at the weld, not the cat but there is a long long resonator after the cat that is cracked pretty good, the car is loud and has been loud but would this cause the hesitation? i guess i should change my rotor but i can't get the phillips head screw out, could i use an impact driver to get it out or will that snap the whole shaft?

Re: (slammedef06)
can u get a set of needle nose vise grips around the side of the screw
while you use the phillips on the head of it and turn them both at the same time?

Re: (SKDRCR)
maybe i'm gonna try in a little bit. do you think the rotor would cause such a problem or maybe the exhaust crack? is there a way to test my distributor to find out if its bad?

not the distributor...the ignitor in the distributor
i didn't find out what my hesitation was until my car died one day merging onto the interstate.....i had it towed to honda and they told me the ignitor was bad.....i did some looking and the price of a whole distributor was less than $100 more than just the ignitor so i had my car towed back home(AAA plus) and replaced it myself

Re: (Silver Surfer)
well i just changed my rotor, overall the car feels smoother but as for the problem, its still there. i'm convinced its something to do with the fuel...i recently changed my fuel filter so i guess that leaves the fuel injectors, fuel pump etc... what are the symptoms of a bad fuel pump and how do you tell?

Re: (slammedef06)
for all the money you've spend replacing things you could have just taken it to honda and had them diagnose it.

Re: (H22Ej2)
so i guess next on the list for me would by the o2 sensor and the ignitor...where is the ignitor? is it the external black box where the 5th spark plug wire goes? if not what is that? thanks
