At 170,000 you're asking for trouble.
Rebuild w/lower compression ratio pistons, that'll help you "tune" the turbo.
Sounds like you need to do a whole lot more researching before you take on this project.
Good luck.

-cylinders sleeved (Golden Eagle)
-pistons and rings (JE/SRP pistons)
-con-rods (Crower)
-aftermarket radiator (Fluidyne)
you'll probably have to get a lot of the major maintenance items like water pump, and timing belt replaced as well.
EDIT: all that stuff wil allow you to boost more than 8 PSI, just make sure you have a good fuel management system.

Just a note, but those items that BlueShadow posted are only options and are not necessarily the exact product names you have to go with. I also wouldn't bother with the Fluidyne radiator unless you're doing long track racing events, and I mean seriously long track events.
Remember what BlueShadow mentioned at the end, there's alot of expense in a rebuild that goes into water pump, oil pump, all the gaskets and seals that are needed when rebuilding an engine.

I am in the same boat...albeit i only have around 120k miles.
I am planning to rebuild the engine first, then turbo it, probably with the FMAX kit.
I want to keep a 10:1 CR and just use less boost. From what I have read, this is possible, but it just makes the window to tune a bit smaller. Is this worth it, or am i just asking for trouble? I notice a lot of you guys are using 9:1 pistons...

10:1 with moderate boost levels if u are tuned really good...this compression gives the motor more power when u are in off boost situations
with 9:1, u can use higher boost levels and is extra insurance
