Flywheel/ Starter :(
Hey very occasionally, my car wont start and it makes a really loud SHRIEKING sound. The car has a new JUN flywheel and exedy clutch back in 2003 and i dont know what the problem is.. Could this be an easy fix or noT?
my friend had a prob like this with his 2.5rs i would imagine since all starters and flywheels work on the same principles it could help. it could be you starter, there is a bendix gear at the end, so when the starter is engaged it can lock up one way (turning the flywheel) but spins free the other way (once the engine starts and the flywheel is spinning the bendix gear). so it could be that. As far as the intermittent no start screeching, that sounds like the same problem he had. the ring gear on the flywheel (in between the hub and the geared outer wheel) blew out or whatever, so when he hit the starter, sometimes it worked and sometimes the starter just spun the outer ring and not the hub (attached to the crank). So I'd say pull your starter, see if the gear on the end of it spins both ways or locks up one way and spins the other. and then stick your thumb or a screwdriver, whatever, in the hole and see if you can move the flywheel at all. If it slips at all, its probably the ring gear in the flywheel. hope this helps.

Thanks for the help. In regards to the flywheel. Could it have been installed incorectly? is this a verry difficult procedure? the starter can be seen from the top of the engine bay, so can i just remove it ? uh.. im not sure where ishould go from here, but i will be selling my car soon and i want to get this problem figured out
Thanks, Evan

tough to say on the bad install, my friend had this problem right after he got the car fixed cuz the clutch shredded (the day he bought it), but then again he bought the car and had it fixed by the shadiest car shop in town. So it could be that it was installed a little crooked or something, which could be why it doesn't always connect. as far as the starter, yeah pretty much just take the wires off, then take out the two bolts holding it in. You'll wanna disconnect the negative battery terminal before you do this too.
I'm guessing it's the flywheel ring gear thats doing this. before you take the starter out you could pull out the little rubber plug where the tranny and the block meet up and look in there with a flashlight to see if the flywheel looks crooked or if you can see anything wierd.
good luck!
