Default Fixing syncros?

im assuming thats the problem. it only happenns going from 4th to 5th. but if im shifting and the rpm's are above 3k i get a little vibration like its about to grind. but when i shift after redlining 4th i get a bad grinding sound. i havent done anything out of the ordinary and it just started this morning.

whatever it is, how much woud it cost to fix? and if i shift slower so the rpms get a chance to drop and it doesnt grind... will that keep it from getting worse? also, what can cause this to happen?

all you have to do is change to GM syncromesh trans fluid, the grinding will stop.

I think only GM dealers carry it

Not a bad idea, but keep in mind it is not a permanant solution to your problem. Just a temporary one. More then likely, you will need to replace your synchro's as the grinding becomes more severe. I recommend replacing ALL the synchro's while your tranny is out.

No, you're going to have to go to General Motors(GM) dealer to get it, they should have it in the parts deparment. Also there are two different kinds of GM synchromesh, get the regular one.

I remember seein a guy in the teg forum, i think, that did a VERY good write up on swapping out the main-shaft on his tranny when it got stripped by a flywheel....he also mentioned how to swap out syncros!

i was reading around the teg forum. i didnt find the how-to, but i saw a talk about which fluid to get... either regular or friction modified. i saw a few opinions, but does anyone know for sure which i should get. and if it matters i have lsd(phantom grip).

also, how long will it take before it gets worse? and what can cause this to start? did i do something or is it just a random occurance?

Yes this is true but I had the same thing grind going into 5th. Put in the Synchromesh and have driven about 20k miles or so with no grind at all. So I also recommend it. the $30 you are going to spend is well worth it even if it is just buying you time.

Well Im putting a rebuilt transmission into my race car. Should I put the honda MTF fluid in it. Or shoud i just always use the syncromesh from the beginning to the end. Or just put it in when it startes to grind.

I had the same problem on my 93 Prelude VTEC and just put in GM Synchromesh tranny fluid (the regular one and not friction modified) today and it lived up to the hype. The car shifts much smoother now into each gear and my 5th gear grind disappeared.

I think we need to mass email the bastards at Level 10. They were supposed to come out with a manual rebuild kit 2 years ago! The Syncro mesh will help you get by for a while but you'll need to rebuild. And hope Hondas selling the syncs by themselves cause they go back and fourth from that and you having to buy the entire gear set to get them.

*Call out to the aftermarket* We need some tranny internals too!!!

I would run Syncromesh from the start; it really can't hurt anything.

i have the gm synchromesh in mine and it still
grinds into fifth if i'm high in the rpm band in fourth
i guess my synchro is worse than most of your's
so if i'm at the top of fourth, i either let it slide into
fifth or double clutch it

Just an FYI on GM synchromesh it is available Autzone's and some auto parts stores. This fluid is produced by Pennzoil and can be had for 'half' the price as the dealer is charging. It is the regular synchromesh not the friction modified crap. It is the yellow Pennzoil packaging that says synchromesh. And yes synchromesh is made by Pennzoil.

Pennzoil is the same thing as the GM Synchromesh or is it similiar to that.
If you go to the parts store and ask for HONDA MTF the parts store will give you 5W-30 oil and its doesnt work the same as the HONDA MTF.

Yea I know they sell them in gear sets I just havent priced it yet..... I too have an account with the local honda dealerships through a shop I work at part time... I'll probably do better price wise though to get em from hparts.com or somewhere online.... 2nd is really fubared... and 3rd has seen better days no problems with any others.....
