cut valve cover?

Yes you do need to cut your camshaft and camgear covers away, not to stop it the adjustable gears catching but so you can adjust the gears without removing the covers each time.
I don't know which gears have the most adjustment but I am using Arospeed on mine which adjust +/- 10 degrees and is more than enough, they also have five fixing bolts compared to AEM cam gears which only have three so are less likely to move.
Here is a pic of what they look like when fitted. I know I'll probably get flamed for my cam cover but it was cheaper than buying a new one and my red paint was cracking and peeling off. I'm happy with it anyway.

I just want to say...that all you guys dissing on this guy's valve cover are bastards. It looks clean, it looks JDM y0! ...but most of all, it's original. Back off the guy.
From, another Luder that gets ridiculed for his creativeness.
P/S, I'm kidding...mostly, but you guys are still bastards!

I kinda like it... for creativity...
I bet you don't see too many like that...definitely one of a kind...
Alot more interesting than some red or blue or black cover...and it took more work to come out looking decent than just buying a red or blue or black cover...

Yep, you can just cut off the entire piece that covers the cam gears and even leave the bottom plastic cover off if you want. But I personally wouldn't recommend it as you don't want any dirt or water getting on the cam gears or belts.
Would also be quite dangerous if you were working on your engine when it is idling as the gears would be fully exposed, with obvious consequences if you or a tool got caught in them.

It's worth taking that extra bit of time to do neat job as you only do it once and want as little as possible of the gears exposed. All you have to do is mark a circle in felt tip on the side of the cam cover and plastic cover then drill a series of small holes inside the line, cut through holes with a small hacksaw blade, then smooth it off with a dremel cutter. Hope this helps.

also, if u can pick up a spare valve cover for cheap, u could just cut the one that looks worse, tune the car with the cut one, and once its done put the good one back over, best of both worlds, ive seen valve covers for <$100 some places...

anybody ever try cutting their cover and then hinging the piece they cut off to the valve cover? that way, all you have to do is open it like a door, adjust it, then shut it. have it clip or snap on the other end so it doesn't flap around. it would be safer, but i'm not sure how professional it would look or if there was even enough room for a small hinge.
