What made the customer decide to do this to a Preludeż Just curious as a lot of people think they are not very competitive in drag racing/autox.
this guy had the car already and an extra motor laying around from one that was wrecked. I went for a ride in my turbo civic and was hooked. So we did some checking on a few parts and you see what happened.

Well we had a pretty day at the dyno:

512 WHP / 382 WTQ @ 22 psi on pump gas.

Bewteen the motor and the manifold, the turbo spools really fast and hard. 1 and 2 are pretty much worthless with street tires, 3rd starts to hook until about 5000 then you have to back pedal to 8000, 4th finally hooks and really pulls hards. I don't have a scanner for the graph, but I'll try to post it when I get a chance. Also, we were not allowed to be close to be able to take a good video, but I'll have to get a few "in car video's" when I get a chance.

wow and thats with the stock valvetrain? Why do so many people upgrade these parts when it seems its clear they are not needed?

Sounds like a beast and I can't wait to see the vids!

The cams are the stock part of the valvetrain. The valves are stock size aftermarket and the springs are upgraded as well. At 15 psi is was making 430 whp at about 9000. As the power went up the power curve of the cams dropped to about 8200. This is a good thing since it will increase engine life.

wow thats impressive

Makes me wonder why anyone would want to upgrade their cams if they can handle that kind of power.....I guess for max power at max rpm but like you said it wont last as long.

When we spec'd the motor for the application at Endyn, Larry told us (I'm not 100% on this since it been a while) that the cams were good to 750HP.....i think. Its the same thing with a B-series. GSR cams are good to 650HP and TypeR's are more then that. At the same time, the TypeR cams basically shift every up 1000 RPM over the GSR's and you have to twist up higher to see the performance of the cam. Its better to fit the cam to the application and not just get the biggest one avaiable since the valve spring life is also effected by the amount of lift. So if anyone is building a motor for the street, basically the stock cams are the best. Even a SOHC VTEC cam is good to 450hp.

wow I did not know any of this. I thought cams were one of the first upgrades to add some power.

I'm looking into building an all motor H22 that will put out up to 250whp which is why I ask. NA is a lot different though I guess as you have to utilize all the parts you can to produce any decent amount of power.

What if you say put the Type S cams in your motor? Would you not produce more power throughout the rev range? Or would this lessen the life of your motor because of the higher lifts of the cam?

I don't know the exact specs for the Type S cams, but most of the stock style cams are pretty good and you should get a good life out of them. Being all motor though, you are going to be spinning it higher to make the power that you want, so your engine life will be efected also by RPM. Call and talk to Endyn about your build and they can help you with a good starting place. I talk to Larry and Josh all the time about applictions we deal with and I have always had great results.
