Body Rust
hi guys,
does anyone had any experience getting rid of rust on the body of a car. My prelude has a few large spots that needed to be fixed, i just don't know what is the best way of fixing them. Please advise me how could I fix that, that rust is like cancer - it just keep on getting worse. I really want to fix my car so it wont get completely rotten. Thanx for your help.

Well, you want to get a rust/paint removing wheel for a drill (with all the little metal wires) and some sort of grinder, like an angle grinder or die grinder with grinding wheels and cutoff wheels.

Get the paint off of the rusted area first and then you can see what you have to work with. The wheel may get it all off, or it may be deeper and thicker to where you'll have to grind it off. You basically just take it down until all you have is clean metal and no more rust. Then it's all about the body work, weld in a new panel or plate, body filler for the little holes, primer, paint, etc...

push on the bad areas. if they blow through though you'll need to do some welding
don't start unless you yourself or a buddy has the welder's etc. (or else you'll just make it look worse)
For little holes you can use bondo but must make sure you get all rust off, than use a alcohol based cleaner (paint prep wipes work good too) to remove impurities from surface BEFORE EVERY paint application. Make sure the surface is perfectly smooth and clean or paint won't last more than a couple weeks. Also, if its not perfectly smooth paint won't layer on it well.
Use a rust inhibiting primer that suits your paint color!
When spraying with a spray can move can over Entire area (from left to right) that is desired to be painted (holding it a good 12 or so inches away from surface).
I also found it was easier working small areas at one time. Also, keep your work area dust free. vacuum regularly, wipe regularly with paint prep wipes, and practice (you'll get lots probably anyway)
If using clear coats, apply b4 your other paint is dry. that allows the clear coat to have somthing to stick too given that clear is a bit runnier. Apply 2-3 coats of each MAXXXX. Don't over load paint or it will look like ****.
good luck!

Hi
Hope you have good luck with the rust repair job.
I have a 92 prelude with a little and some crumpling wheel well edges.
Do let me know how you make out.
I live in Calgary and the amount of salt on the roads in winter is horrendous
Thanks
J

if its just starting to bubble GO TO REPUTABLE REPAIR SHOP b4 its too late or get rid of that **** now. if you need more DIYS info on painting just ask, but GET it done! Mine are blowing out again only a year after i got my shitty paint / body job from a piece of **** paint shop (one man shop, who had no business running a business). Also start power washing your inner fender walls (undercoating and oil spraying will help. Those fenders rust from inside out. Thats why you only see a bit of bubbling even though the fender is probably already destroyed
the second you have to reweld parts onto fenders you create a spot (where weld is) where you can promote rust and make things even worse. so if you can get to it b4 you have to reweld than you risk less future bubbling.
