Default The beast is overheating....

Dammit...I was on a long drive home and totally zoned out to the new Korn CD and something over on my dash gets my attention.

MY WATER TEMP GAUGE IS FULL AT THE RED LINE

well dammit. After several stops and waiting and taking it easy with the heater on full blast I make it home. What the hell happened.

Notes:
1. Noticed earlier on the fan was running when the car was shut off. Kind of weird given it's winter here and maybe 36 degrees outside.
2. I thought I smelled some coolant.....
3. But I don't see white smoke in the exhaust, but it's cold so you can see the exhuast anyway.

I'm just thinking somehow I must be low on coolant or something, but maybe it's the head gasket. Oh well, that's why I got a beater

So what things should I check and in what order?

check coolent level in reserve right now. check in raditior when it cools down. if its empty refill and keep an eye.

if its full, start it up and see if there is pressure in the hoses when it at normal temp. check thrmo.

i chased a leak for about 2 weeks, turns out the radaitor was leaking out of the base.

Probably low on coolant. If you are you may have a leak. How old is your water pump thermostat and radiator?

coolant level in the reserve has been empty since we put the engine in, note to self: look into that

I can just pull off the cap and check it out once it's cool no?

I was using Motul rad fluid if that means anything...maybe it just held out longer on low fluid haah

low coolant level? took my days to find the small leak in the upper tube for my legend...

Thermostat is new, put in when we built the motor. The rad is OEM honda from a JDM I think but in fine working shape and was also put in when we put the motor back in the car like 20,000 miles ago

one quick way to find if it is the head gasket:
1. when cool remove the rad. cap. turn on car.
2. let it idle
3. if you observed bubbles forming then you can conclude it is the head gasket.
because at this point there should be no air trapped in the cooling system unless somebody did not bleed the cooling system.
4. if no bubbles form do pressure test on the system for leaks.
hoope this was helpful and goodluck.

yeah I am pretty sure it's coolant level cause by either a leak somewhere or slow leak in the head gasket. We'll see tomorrow. Thanks for the input

check every hose coolant runs through.

I actually blew a hose up (coolant bypass hose) on my b-series and before it blew it had a small leak that would leak enough coolant to where i would get air in the system and over heat.

I had mine over heat like this one day. Coolant wasn't low... I had just put the motor back int he car a few days before. Guess I didn't get the connector for the fan on the thermostat housing on tight enough. Pushed it on a little more and I was all set. But you said your fan was running so might not be that... But it could be just a little loose...

the gasket around the water pump went out last year on my car. i had to drive it 40 miles to get home so i could work on it. i ended up filling 15 one gallon zip lock bags full of water and putting them in trunk. i was topping the radiator off every 3-4 miles. luckily i had some super thick/huge gloves + shop towels so i didn't get burned everytime i took the cap off.

I ran with an overheated nissan truck years ago and blew a small hole in the head gasket....

if you have trouble finding the leak there is a dye you can put in the fluid. it illuminates under a black light i believe, it makes finding the leak a whole lot easier. good luck.

maybe the air bleed screw popped loose also, mine did that once shoots coolant like a water pistol......... i doubt its you're HG.... likely that its just low on coolant.... fill the resivoir, see if it takes it all, or just a lil....... if it takes it all, you've likely got a leak somewhere..... you'd also know it if the HG were shot, you'd be able to tell the difference in the coolant being burned from exhaust

Not to hijack post.

My prelude just started overheating this morning.
I ran 20w50( Chevron Supreme Motor Oil SAE 20W-50 )oil thinking thicker is better, The car has got 120kmiles. Well the car began to overheat, I just added more coolant, haven't bled the radiator yet.

Is it most likely the heavier oil?
I usually run 5w30( Castrol Syntec Full Synthetic Motor OilSAE 5W-30)

Does everyone fan kick in everytime (I do mean EVERYTIME) you turn off the ignition? I noticed that before my car got overheated also...maybe, its a sign??

I think I also have a head gasket problem since I can see tiny bubble in the radiator when I ran it without the thermostat

It just started doing that that very day, so I think the problem just a happened. I haven't had a chance to check the coolant level, hopefully its that simple.

Yeah, Korn is my all time favorite band. My fav. song on the new album is Alive (track 9).

Favorite album was Untouchables. I think I have listened to that album over 1000 times...literally.

Anyways, good luck with the car trouble.

Alive is a really old school demo, they used that chrous in Need to on the self-titled so it was cool to see it finally get made, I had the bootleg copy already.

I'm a big fan of counting on me and deep inside, but yeah alive has the most old school vibe to it cause that's when it was written.

I like to play Life is peachy a lot cause it's just angry and all over the place. But I'll always the original a lot.

oh well let's hope the car isn't fucked!
