Default bad relay?

Heres my situation say i dont touch the car for a day or 2 i can come out and crank it up and it will drive fine. But after i turn the car off it wont start back up like the fuel pump just stops pumping. The pump obviously works or else when i drive it i would have some issues. Would my relay be shorting out? Do relays just go bad becuase ive never done anything to mess the relay up when i was swaping the motor. How hard is to change or check the relay and does anyone have pictures or a description of where or what it looks like. Or do you have an idea what my problem might be? Check engine light does come on codes 12 and 1 are what im getting i belive.
