Automatic h23 and mods
Well, I have a 93 lude si with the h23 in it. It also is an automatic. I want to do some engine work to it and then add a turbo sometime in the future. Are there any advantages or disadvantages to having an automatic and going the turbo path?
One advantage of having a turbocharged automatic transmission car is that it holds boost throughout all the gears since the throttle body does not close between shifts... provided you keep your foot on the gas.
The disadvantage though is the automatic transmission's torque converter. Take for example the HKS v6 accord that they turbocharged. Overall, the accord only picked up three tenths of a second faster in its 0-60 time as well as quarter mile time. As soon as they hit boost, they could hear the transmission making all sorts of strange sounds. Basically when you have a regular honda automatic transmission, its made for the power that came with the car. When more power is added the majority of it is wasted as the converter tries to get itself together.
Your best bet is to either do a 5spd swap or get a level 10 torque convertor which will help out greatly.
The biggest disadvantage is not being able to hold the power. The HKS accord the torque convertor. You lose gobs of power through an automatic transmission plus it usually

OK, so what would be the best thing to do you think? Drop $500+install on torque converter, or go ahead and do a 5speed swap for $?? (i dont know the price on a swap like that).
Going 5 speed will probably be your best bet. I dont even know if level 10 makes a torque convertor for the h23a or not. You can find a nice used h23a tranny for around $300-500 depending on how hard you look, $350 for a decent clutch, and $200ish for all the extra's (shift linkages, etc.)
The install is what is going to be pricey. Maybe around the $500-800 range?

Around ~$2000. I figured that would be my best bet. Seeing as how I have a h23 and not a h22, I figure I would turbocharge it, instead of just building the hell out of it. Never had any experience with 5spds, so i think I would have to learn on a junker so I wouldnt kill my flywheel\clutch in my early learning stages. Manual is more fun than Auto anyway
Thanks for the help, Gude!
Edit: How about the disadvantages to converting a auto into a manual? any? :\
