Default Adjusting distributor

When adjusting a distributor what angle are you supposed to look at to line up the pointer and the marks on thel flywheel? I tried to get as close to 90 degrees to the inspection hole as I could, just making sure I was right

i've got a timing light, if you look through the inspection hole at different angles, the position of the marks in relation to the pointer will change

Just try to look from as straight above as you can judge. Where the light beam is perpendicular to the flywheel surface and the little pointer.
