92 Prelude Si transmission knocks/thumps loudly/violently at 40+ mph
My 92 Prelude runs fine for about the first 10 minutes. After it warms up, the transmission (or drivetrain, I really don't know) will begin to knock very, very loudly. In fact, when I accelerate (from 60 to 75 mpg, for example) the whole car will shake, sometimes violently. At the same time, if I push in the clutch, everything seems perfectly fine. I had this problem fixed about 12,000 miles ago and was given a 24,000 mile warranty (at a cost of about $2,400). The same mechanic is now telling me the car is running fine for him. He does claim to hear a slight noise coming from front axle (that does not go away when the clutch is pushed in) and wants to know if I want that fixed.

Re: 92 Prelude Si transmission knocks/thumps loudly/violently at 40+ mph (duder)
I had a similar problem with my 92 si a while back. It would knock and shake when I hit abour 65-80mph. I thought it might have been the engine or tranny but when I took a closer look, the boots on my both my axles were loose and axel greese was everywhere. I went to Pep boys and bought some brackets to secure the boots and added more axel greese the the joints. This solved my problem. You might want to check your axels for wear and tear. Total cost was something like $15.

Re: 92 Prelude Si transmission knocks/thumps loudly/violently at 40+ mph (Accord94DX)
Thanks for responses. I don't really think "shake" is the right term. It's more like a vibration; similar to something that is turning, but out of balance. The sound is kinda' like a rubber hammer hitting the bottom of the car. While the problem can be exaggerated by acceleration, it occurs even when slowing down or using cruise control at speeds as low as 40 mph.
