5th gear grind
So my 93 prelude has the typical 5th gear grind. I have been reading around A common idea for the problem is that the oem shift fork bends rather easily and causes more stress on the synchro. I am thinking about buying and replacing the 5th gear shift fork, synchro, sleeve, hub, and spring. My question is has anybody changed out the fork and synchro? Also, any other gears that I should be worried about?

Re: 5th gear grind
Pretty straight forward if you have the helms manual and are carefully paying attention and make sure you put it back together the same way you took it apart. 5th is at the end of the main shaft so you don't have to really pull everything completely apart to redo that gear.

Re: 5th gear grind
does anybody make an after market one? i think mine is bent too. i have no reverse and 5th gear grinds unless the rpms are real low. is the only way to get one of these to pull it out of another trans?

Re: 5th gear grind
If you are talking about shift forks, OEM forks are not that expensive. I was looking around and found the 5th gear shift fork for about 35-40 dollars. From what I have read, Honda has fixed the issues with them bending. If you really do not trust it, you could always have it cryo treated.

if its a slight grind that's not always there, try using GM synchromesh manual transmission fluid. found at local parts store, i know autozone and pep boys carries it.
See if that works, it helps, tried it many times on a few cars i owned, that had the same problem.
I stick with oem honda manual fluid now tho. its best to use oem fluid since its recommend and is specifically made for it and u will probably save the synchros/gears and will last you a long time if you stick with the oem fluid.
but try that and see if the grind disappears, you might have to drive it around a lil bit for it to kick in and work. I would run that fluid temporarily to see what happens. its like $7.50 a bottle (1qt)
or keep inspecting it, it might be a bent fork like you stated

Re: 5th gear grind
I have read, from people who have used synchromesh, that it usually only fixed the problem for a short time. Some said the grinds got a lot worse when they did come back. Just an FYI...not being a naysayer since I have never used it. That's just what I read.
Personally, I do not think I would use anything other than Honda mtf.

Re: 5th gear grind
I see the shift fork is for 5th and Reverse. If only 5th gear has an intermittent grind is it still the shift fork or could the clutch be causing it? Also, has anyone had luck fixing the problem by bleeding the clutch?
Thx.
Thx.

Re: 5th gear grind
There is a TSB from Honda on this and they say it was a manufacturing problem with the 5th gear shift fork which is why you should change it if you want to completely get rid of the grind.

Re: 5th gear grind
Has anyone just changed out the 5th gear shift fork and successfully removed the grind? I just don't understand if the grind has left and grinds because of permanent synchro damage or if a new shift fork would completely eliminate the problem. It would be a lot cheaper to change the shift fork rather than the synchro assembly and shift fork. Think I will talk to transmission specialist when I return from vacation.

Re: 5th gear grind
I'd do both, the fork being out more than likely f'ed the synchro too, the TSB says to replace both of those and the gear but that all depends on how bad the teeth look. You also have to remember that 5th is at the end of the mainshaft, if the fluid is low or old it will suffer damage before all other gears.

Re: 5th gear grind
Sorry, should have clarified you need to replace AT LEAST the shift fork and then syncro, hub, and/or gear depending on condition. If you have been grinding, more than likely the syncro is toast, the hub is a possibility and the gear is questionable.

Re: 5th gear grind
Yeah from all the transmissions I have seen opened up at work when the had the TSB on the 8th gen Si the gear rarely had to be replaced, you had to beat it up pretty bad. Like mine can grind if I rev it up high and shift into 5th but since it has only done it a few times I'm just going to do the synchro set and fork. Most people might want to have the gear on hand just in case and if they don't need it send it back or sell it.

Re: 5th gear grind
Mine never had an issue. I only ground it once and after that I had no reverse and I have to let the rpm's drop to almost idle to go into fifth with out it grindin and it still cluncks in.
