Default 4WS Issue

I have been driving my 93 4WS Prelude for about two years now without incident (besides the 4WS resolder). Last night my friend noticed a squeaking noise coming from the back of the car that he thought was brake related but upon further inspection seems to be coming from inside the 4WS rack. I know that they are rare cars and some people dont like them but I love it and I want it to work. Has anyone else on here experienced this problem or know what it could possibly be? I know that for now I can unplug the system because a new rack is $2,000 from Honda but I should be able to find one used if worse case scenario. The manual appears to say that it is a closed system and is not repairable but is this the case or can I pull it apart and see what is going on in there? It almost sounds like it needs to be greased but it doesnt look like it should be opened up.

a little more specific on what is going on? when is it making noises, when the wheels are turning or when the car is rolling? where specifically is the sound coming from etc.

when i first start my car and backup sometimes I get a little squeak but i don't pay any attention to it. If the 4ws still works fine I wouldn't worry to much.
If worse Cause try http://www.beavershondasalvage.com/index.htm
they ship to Lower 48 and they have they Rack for $100.

Thanks for the input. I was able to source a few junkyards that have them for around $100, nothing close but the place that you gave me ships. I guess there is not a high demand for the parts. The noise happens when the wheel is being turned and it is definately coming from inside the rack, I had my ear on it while I had someone else turning the wheel.

The system is amazing, when you turn your wheel to the right at lower speeds it turns the rear wheels the opposite direction so it turns on a dime. My father has a Jeep Wrangler which has a super tight turning radius and it doesn't hold a candle to the turning radius on my Prelude. I want to swap in an H22 to complete the package this summer but since it is my DD i need it to stay reliable right now. I also know that it is rare so any help, even on this board, is going to be limited.

what is rare? swapping an h22 into a 4ws 4th gen? no different than a regular swap. A lot of people think that they can't do it easy, but the motor/tranny/ecu has nothing to do with your 4ws system. you have our front and rear man and sub steering angle sensors, vehicle speed sensor, and your 4ws computer to decide how to turn the wheels. I was going to write an informative article on the 4th gens 4ws system and myths and misconceptions a while ago but never got around to it. maybe i'll have to get on that...

if you wren't talkingabout h22 and 4ws compatibility, then sorry i rambled on.

now something that is rare: vtec/4ws gauge cluster. (showing proper H22 redline, and 4ws light) I always figured that I coudl get a regular old h22 cluster, and run the 4ws indicator light wires to an led mounted elsewhere on the dash/console to show when there was a 4ws malfunction to be diagnosed...

off topic: i thought about runningsomething similar (remote led) for turn signal indicators. I drive in JUST the right position that i cannot tell when my blinker doesn't shut off because the steering wheel is in the way and sometimes drive for miles with the damn things on... plus the rocker switch to go to ecu code check mode.. expletive i'm going on about nothing now.. it's 1:30 and i'm just going insane... I guess I have some write-ups to do.. goodnight

How about a 4ws EL cluster? I know the redline is wrong (H23) but there was only one year the prelude had EL's and 4ws.

Nope, but I guess for the right price anything is for sale.

Ha Ha I was just talking about tech related knowledge about 4ws Preludes being hard to find I know that it is a simple swap to put an H22 in the car. As for the cluster, I would rather just run a simple light that would come on under the dash anyway and have the H22 redline, especially if it is an EL gauge.

wstef has the one I need, EL, 4ws, lhd, vtec, and metric! talk about rare! it's gotta come from poland or something.

I have a non EL, RHD (therefore metric) vtec (proper redline for my h22a swap) w/ 4ws converted to LHD, it works alright, but it has the common prob of a couple bulbs not being retained in their housing (so some dark spots), and the speed isn't exact....which is my biggest sore-point with it. although I think there is a way to adjust that.

if someone does the rewiring of the 4ws light to another place on the dash in order to use more common EL offerings, please do a write up! cheers

A 4ws indicator light is as simple as adding another bulb in its place of the same wattage as the SRS light and drilling a small hole in the face. I did it. Works perfectly for my 4WS.
