Default 4WS Conversion

Hey guys I am in the process of installing the 4WS system onto my car. I'm at a point now though where I have hit a dead end. Everything is installed... When I pull the Radio fuse to reset the 4WS computer it seems to be okay. I start the car and I can hear the 4WS unit making it's relay sounds. Then the rear wheels for some odd reason turn almost all the way in one direction with the steering wheel untouched. Then if you try turning the steering wheel, the rear wheels will turn slightly but if you turn the steering wheel so far the 4WS light will come on and the rear wheels will go back to the straight position. I jumped the service check connector and it gave me codes 12 and 22. But something that is strange is if I pull the radio fuse to reset the 4WS unit and then jump the service check connector again without the car started, it will still throw codes 12 and 22. I took my car down to the Honda Dealership and they spent 4 hours trying to figure out the problem. They couldn't figure it out. They told me I should possibly try and replace the 4WS unit itself...so yeah I am at that point.

Have any of you guys ever done a 4WS conversion or know anyone that has done it and has run into similar problems and possibly figured it out? Any help would be highly appreciated!

Thanks!
Matt

Jealous of 4ws??? Hahahaha.....there was a reason Honda stopped making it.
Why do companies make DELETE kits for it?
Its lame....another thing to break.

Honda made it as long as it made the Prelude, although I guess you could apply the same "they stopped making it because it sucked" logic to the car as well. But maybe you might want to find another forum to do that

What is the reason honda stopped? same reason they stopped making the prelude, they probably just couldnt sell enough of them. They make delete kits for it, becasue its not ideal for a drift car. why do you think some of the 07 amnd 08 cars that are coming out have AWS, its gotta be becuase its useless right?

I agree that it is very useful, but not that it isn't ideal for a drift car... The prelude is not ideal for a drift car, FWD...lol

anyways back on topic. If you don't know what the codes are I can look them up for you. ==are you adding 4ws to a vtec/si model or a base s model prelude?== the wheels WOULD turn when you started the car if teh front wheels weren't straight, but it sounds liek they are. if thay are straight and the rear wheels turn, the computer is getting a wrong signal from one of the steering angle sensors. (there are a few)

Most "HONDA" mechanics I've came across only know a lot about the new technologies that are out and something as rare to find as a 4ws prelude at the dealership, all they are doing is looking through the manual to see what coudl be the problem. so basically, what many people on here woudl do and get paid for it.

send me an IM if you can't figure out the codes and i'll get them for you.

Preludes definitely suck!

Im sure its great for parallel parking......
Preludes drift just fine if you know what youre doing....
Im just not into time intensive swaps to be unique that have no real use.
To each his own....

Oh yah, and Preludes suck!

LOL. i said 4ws is not ideal for drift cars, so my friend with an r33 had the hikas (4ws) eliminators on his drift car. I like the 4ws on 2 out of the 3 of my preludes, but i dont think i would go through the hassel to convert one. also its kinda scary on the highway if the system malfunctions and the back wheels sway a little.

I think we can chalk it up to a 90% useless item that adds to the list of: MORE **** TO BREAK!

Geez c'mon guys I was asking if anyone had done this conversion so that I could get any help with it. I didn't ask anyone's opinion on whether or not to install or whatever. Everyone that has replied to this thread has stated their opinion...I honestly don't care what any of you think. I just wanted some help to complete the install. Geeez!

I think you might have a simple issue. I think one of the wires you connected to the 4WS ECU is crossed. Make sure the ground wires is making a good connection too.

I crossed one of the wires by accident and it did EXACTLY what you described.

Hey Andy, so I take it you have done this conversion? What wire was crossed that you found out was making this problem occur? I feel like I'm really close to finishing this conversion....

Hmm I love the way 4ws handles on the 3gs,never have driven a 4g tho..
they rotate really nicely, understeers less than my civic but its not as crisp and direct feeling.
but yeah its kinda a wierd jump back and forth the civic has no powersteering and is definatly faster but i have to work harder for it...
