YZF600R Transmission Problems?
So, my Nighthawk is sold and I'm on the quest for a new bike.
I found a 1995 Yamaha YZF600R on CL. Has 19k, and the seller says there are no problems with the trans. Everything shifts smoothly. He is asking 2700obo.
Now, I've researched a little bit about it, found a thread or two on here with a little information, but I was just wondering if anyone else have any input on this. I heard that 2nd gear likes to crap out. But it only happens to some of the bikes. With 19,000 miles on it, do you think that it will be immune from the transmission woes? Or should I keep looking?
Also, whats a good price to offer him? Bike looks like its in great condition.

first off, congrats on the sale but i really think that price is way too high. I'd go 2k max unless it is mint. not sure about the tranny problems though, goodluck man

Re: YZF600R Transmission Problems? (iLude)
for reference i just picked up a 01 yzf600r for $3800 from a private seller on CL and it had 1388 miles on it but i've been lurking on this forum http://www.yzf600r.com/phpBB2/ and it is a common problem for 2nd gear to pop out of gear when under high rpm or just not shifting with enough pressure.
do a search on that forum and you'll be returned tons of threads on that topic. So far i've been lucky on mine, 200 miles under my belt and the only time i don't get into 2nd gear is when i don't shift with enough pressure and it just shifts to neutral.

KBB for around here is $3100, I was thinking of going no higher than $2500..
KiddEng, thanks for the link I'll probably check it out this weekend and see if I like it. I was going to look at a CBR600F3 but it was just sold tonight. I might wait around for another one to pop up.

Duy got his for 1500 did the 1k front end upgrade... fun little thrasher. the forks in the tranny that are made from stamped metal have the tendency to snap off if abused. and your right it is second Right out of neutral/ its a easy fix form what duy tells me. I think 2k is a bit much

Re: YZF600R Transmission Problems? (iLude)
I picked up a 1996 YZF600 with 11K miles for $2200 a month ago. It has a cracked front fairing but is otherwise in immaculate shape. It's my first bike so I'm cool with a touch of cosmetic damage. Haven't ridden it so I can't comment on the trans problems.
Check out http://www.oldskoolyzf.com/forum/phpBB2/ which is dedicated to the 1st generation YZF (1995-1996). There's a whole bunch of confusion as to what the difference between a 94-95 FZR600R and a 95-96 YZF600 are.

Re: YZF600R Transmission Problems? (GSpeedR)
How do people keep finding bikes for so much under blue book value?
I haven't seen many bikes I'm looking at (such as F2s, F3s, FZRs, YZFs, etc) with asking prices under $3000. Is it just the market around here?
I'm looking right now, and every F3 is between 3450-4000.

i got lucky on my deal as the seller didn't really check the blue book... but being prime riding season the prices will be high. FYI high mileage f3's around jersey are going for 3200-3600

Re: YZF600R Transmission Problems? (KiddEng)
I had an 01 yzf600r and my second gear crapped out on me at 8,000 miles. Easy test would be while ur initial test drive give it all the juice its got in second if it will pop out or it would feel like its skipping than obviously there is a prob. Thats not to say that it wont happen in the future but at least you'll know that when you bough the bike the 2nd gear was fine.

Be paitent. I was watching this bike on craigslist and it started at $3000. Dropped to $2300 after a week since nobody bought it and he was trying to move it fast. F3s seem to have a markup over all other bikes.

Re: YZF600R Transmission Problems? (MSchu)
The issues with the 1-2 upshift can pretty much be eliminated with the following a new shift selector shaft and a Factory Pro shift kit. You should also make sure that the bolt that connects the shifter to the shift selector shaft is tight.
Mine was loose after I replaced the shaft and proceeded to break the new part.
Since then, I almost never miss a shift.
PS: my bike now has 52K miles and almost daily riding.
