stock damper vs nothing at all???
im trying to keep from dumping too much money into my bike but i would really like a steering damper. $500 is more then i really want to pay so what do you think about just buying a stock one and fabricating the mounts? i know it won't be adjustable but how much of a difference do you think ill see?

You can get a GPR damper for 350 or a Scotts damper for 400. Maybe that will change your mind. I wouldnt mind spending 400 or so to prevent a tank slapper and save my life.

no it doesn't but i wanted to experiment with changing the head angle. from what ive seen, its an extra 100 to $150 for the mounting kit

make the subtle changes to your rake/trail and then decide if you need a damper... if you cant afford one right out of the box. Keep in mind at speed a bike will naturally want to go straight, so if you get her up to speed and she gets oscillation relax and slowly roll of the gas. sometimes you can power right through the oscillation, but that's a very personal choice

its not that i cant afford it, im just having trouble justifying spending so much on a bike that i bought for 4K and in the end wont really make a GREAT track bike. im still looking at getting a SV650 but i want to sell my 919 first. if i had an SV650 i wouldn't mind spending 10K because the core of the bike is worthy of it.

The 10k + the cost of the sv puts you into a Tuono or a Ducati S4RS

Actually the best fix for some slight head shake to slightly roll _on_ the throttle. Goes away real quick. Most people don't need a steering damper at all but its more of a luxury item unless you are running your bike really hard at extreme angles.

I put a GSXR stock steering damper (with 20w oil) on my SV650 for under $60. It did take a bit of work to fabricate a mounting bracket that cleared everything. I know it's not nearly as nice as the more expensive aftermarket models, but it was cheap and works well enough for me!
You can see it mounted just under the headlight:

If your riding and trying to be cheap, those two scenarios don't go together.
Riding is an expensive hobby or sport, whatever you want to call it.
A good steering dampner is a life saver, especially from tank slaps whatever way you might experience them.
I love my scotts steering dampner and the 400 it cost has saved me numerous times, especially riding on the road.
